NeverFade® Façade Restoration Coatings Win Prestigious Architectural Industry Award

AKRON, Ohio (November 21, 2018) – NeverFade® Façade Restoration Coatings with Kynar Aquatec® have been recognized by Architectural Products Magazine as a 2018 Product Innovation Award (PIA) winner. The exterior coating system also earned a Special Citation for Sustainability.

The Architectural Products PIA champions product ingenuity in the building environment. Winning products and projects were chosen by a panel of 16 judges including architects, interior designers, lighting designers and veteran A/E/C writers based on their value to architects in the specification process. The judges recognized NeverFade® Coatings for its “excellent warranty and excellent life.” They also made note of the coatings as “naturally sustainable as a long-lasting paint with low VOC, allow[ing] for reduction in construction material by increasing recoat periods.”
“Our eighth edition of the award proves commercial building manufacturers are committed to, and are working arduously toward, delivering more sustainable products, as well as products that deliver better performance, life and affordability,” said Jim Crockett, Editorial Director, Architectural Products Magazine.

“We are delighted that industry experts chose NeverFade® as a worthy recipient of this prestigious award,” said Erin Brown-Neff, Director of Marketing & Business Development, APV Engineered Coatings. “NeverFade® has been used on hundreds of thousands of square feet of building exteriors worldwide. The advantages of our coating system have been most significant on commercial and industrial properties, where renovation costs can be high and restoration work is complex. NeverFade’s ability to lengthen the lifespan of such building exteriors has afforded tremendous cost savings to property owners.”

NeverFade® Façade Restoration Coating Shows Strong Color Performance After Eight Years in South Florida

Application in a Coastal Environment Stands up to the Elements

AKRON, Ohio (April 25, 2018) — Some of the harshest outdoor environments in the country have been no match for the superior performance of NeverFade® Façade Restoration Coatings with Kynar Aquatec®. The low VOC, field-applied coating system from APV Engineered Coatings has passed the eight-year mark with no visible fading or chalking on an application in Sanibel Island, Florida, an area known for extreme humidity, high temperatures, corrosion from saltwater, and harsh UV conditions that cause even the most advanced coatings to fade and degrade.

NeverFade® coatings are a line of water-based, low-VOC topcoats that restore and protect building exteriors with long-lasting performance. The products are formulated with Kynar Aquatec®, a tough and industry-proven PVDF resin that resists thermal, chemical and ultraviolet degradation. Serving as the backbone of NeverFade® coating technology, coupled with high performance additives and specialty grade inorganic pigments, Kynar Aquatec® is highly resistant to color fading, chalking, dirt pickup, staining, algae, mold, fungal growth and degradation.

Applied with the compatible primer systems offered by APV, the NeverFade® coating system can even protect against rust, corrosion, and efflorescence, as well as promote long-term adhesion to the building surface. The topcoats are custom-color matched to each customer’s specification in bold and rich colors and come with a 15-year product-and-labor warranty for color performance.

“This warranty is unique to the architectural coatings industry,” said Mike Couchie, Vice President of Sales, APV Engineered Coatings. “With replacement of product and labor included for 15 years of performance, fully transferrable to the building owner, we are making a bold statement, guaranteeing that this product will perform like nothing else on the market. Unlike most other warranties, many of which are not worth the paper they are printed on, the property owner is covered 100 percent for the full 15 years.”

First NeverFade® Application

Ronald D. Rooker of Ron’s Painting LLC in Fort Myers, Florida, was the first contractor to work with NeverFade® when the exterior coating system was launched in 2009. The system was used on a residential property with a stucco exterior in Sanibel Island, Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. The salt air, sea spray and humidity caused the original white paint to severely chalk and degrade, as well as grow mold and algae on the shaded, moisture-prone areas of the home (picture 1). APV had the color custom matched to the request of the homeowner and created a warm, soft yellow called NeverFade® Sanibel Sun. Rooker’s crew used an airless sprayer to apply the coating and then back-rolled it into the stucco profile.

Picture 1: Before NeverFade was installed- mold and algae growth on shaded areas of the facade

Picture 2: Visual Comparison of the standard to aged south-facing wall after 8 years of exposure.

“Being a high-performance coating, NeverFade® was very user-friendly,” said Rooker. “It was only one-component and had the ability to be spray, roll and brush applied when needed. It also kept a nice wet edge and showed no roller marks. It’s a great advantage to the property owner because it retains color and restricts mildew from growing, so the home won’t need to be pressure-cleaned nearly as often as it would if a high-end latex paint was used. Low maintenance was critical for the homeowners, as this is their vacation property.”

8 Years of Performance and Still Going Strong

Delta-E (ΔE) or Total Color Difference is a number that quantifies the distance between two colors. It is calculated based on delta L*, or lightness differences, da* redness or greenness differences, db*, blueness or yellowness differences between two items. When conducting a color analyses, a colorimeter is used to measure the delta L*, a*, b* values on an originally coated color panel (the standard) as well as on a variety of areas on the aged building exterior. An average ΔE is calculated from all of the samplings. As a rule of thumb, the higher the ΔE in comparison to the standard, the greater the difference in color.

Pictures 3 & 4: After 8 years of exposure to high humidity and air temperature in the shade, no algae or mold growth appears on the surface.

A recent examination of the property in Sanibel Island after eight years in service found a ΔE of only 1 unit, well less than the parameters of the warranty, which covers ΔE of 5 or higher. There also were no signs of chalking or coating degradation (picture 2) and had been no mold or algae growth on any area of the property (pictures 3 and 4).

“Eight years without severe fading and chalking in South Florida is traditionally unheard of,” Couchie explained. “Even with high-performance urethanes and 100% acrylic-latex coatings, the pigment and binder have usually begun to degrade and fade leaving a significant shift in color and chalky residue on the surface. If left alone, paint will eventually deteriorate completely, leaving the building’s substrate bare and open to damage from the elements, which is a very costly problem to repair.”

“For us it was all about low maintenance,” said Mickey Ciriello, homeowner. “We used to have the property pressure-washed and repainted every three years, which can be very costly. The past eight years have saved us thousands of dollars and our home looks beautiful.”

A Coating for Every Surface

Since the first application on the Gulf Coast of Florida, NeverFade® Facade Restoration Coatings have been used to coat hundreds of thousands of square feet of building exteriors around the world, including unique applications such as the exterior of the Goodyear Airship to the Jacksonville Jaguars stadium scoreboards to school systems’ bold building exteriors. The product’s advantages have been most significant on commercial and industrial high rises where renovation costs can be high. Its ability to lengthen the lifespan of such building exteriors have afforded tremendous costs savings to building owners.

APV is confident in the product performance for the next eight years and even longer. Kynar Aquatec® has been weathering in the field and in a Miami-based natural weathering testing site for 18 years to date, however; the first-generation technology, Kynar 500®, has been performing for over 50 years in harsh UV-prone environments with exceptional color retention.

Special Session at University of Kynar® Offered Inside Look at Extended Service Life of NeverFade® Exterior Coatings In Extreme UV Environments

MIAMI (November 20, 2017) — APV Engineered Coatings’ Lon Bauer, senior coatings engineer, was a special guest speaker at last week’s University of Kynar® program, sponsored by Arkema Inc. and held at Atlas Material Testing Technology LLC.

Bauer presented to a group of 28 architects, engineers, specifiers and contractors, who were chosen to participate in the invitation-only class to learn about the key differences between NeverFade® Façade Restoration Coatings with Kynar Aquatec® (PVDF) and other high-performance coatings in the architectural industry. After the presentation, the guests walked through Atlas’ natural weathering testing site to see a variety of Kynar 500® and Kynar Aquatec® weathering studies that have spanned over 50 years of exposure in the extreme humidity, temperature, and UV conditions of southern Florida.

After 10-15 years of exposure, the panels with Kynar Aquatec® resin show very little color shift (delta E <5), and no signs of chalking from degradation of the PVDF resin. Other coatings in the study with the same pigments, formulated with acrylic, urethane, and even fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) resins, show much greater degrees of color fade, chalking, and resin degradation color fade in a bright red color, reaching as high as delta E >30 for FEVE and delta E >60 for acrylic urethane.

“It’s important for professionals who specify products for exterior restoration projects to understand a coating’s true service life from a chemical composition standpoint,” said Bauer. “Not all high-performance coatings are created equal and many are formulated with varying loading levels of key polymers that impact their ability to perform in subtropical outdoor environments over an extended length of time. NeverFade® coatings contain high PVDF content that we list on our specification, complex inorganic pigments and proprietary UV additives for the ultimate long-term performance.”

NeverFade® Original Topcoat and NeverFade® Metal Restoration Topcoats are APV’s water-based, low-VOC exterior coatings for a variety of substrates for building façades in the architectural industry. The formulations are engineered with Kynar Aquatec® resin, a tough and industry-proven PVDF resin that resists thermal, chemical and ultraviolet degradation.

Incorporated into the NeverFade® coating technology and coupled with high performance additives and specialty grade inorganic pigments, Kynar Aquatec® resin is highly resistant to color fading, dirt pickup, staining, algae, mold, fungal growth and erosion. Applied with the compatible primer systems offered by APV, the NeverFade® coating system can protect against rust, corrosion, and efflorescence, as well as promote long-term adhesion to the building surface. The topcoats are custom-color matched to each customer’s specification in bold and rich colors and come with a 15-year product-and-labor warranty for color performance.

“We were happy to expand our typical University of Kynar® program to include not just architects, but engineers, specifiers, and contractors, who all work in the same arena,” said Vince Casmirri, marketing manager, Arkema Inc. “It’s a great educational opportunity to show them a ‘cradle-to-cradle’ example of how Kynar 500® and Kynar Aquatec® coating systems transform the industry in real world applications. APV Engineered Coatings is a valued partner, and NeverFade® Facade Restoration Coatings were an exciting topic at this event.”

APV Engineered Coatings Promotes Low-VOC Exterior Restoration Solutions At Green California Schools & Community Colleges Summit

NeverFade® Exterior Coatings with Kynar Aquatec® Resin Save Time and Money by
Lengthening the Lifecycle of Building Facades
Backed by 15-Year Product-and-Labor Warranty

AKRON, Ohio (11/8/2017) — APV Engineered Coatings will exhibit for the first time this year at the Green California Schools & Community Colleges Summit and Exposition, November 28-29, at the Pasadena Convention Center (Booth 226). The company’s exhibit will help school administrators, maintenance directors and facility managers learn how to save money and sustainably extend the life of their building exteriors with its award-winning NeverFade® Exterior Coatings with Kynar Aquatec® resin.

NeverFade® Exterior Coatings are a line of water-based, low-VOC coatings that uniquely restore and protect building exteriors with its long-term performance. The products are formulated with Kynar Aquatec®, a tough and industry-proven PVDF resin that resists thermal, chemical and ultraviolet degradation. Incorporated into the NeverFade® coating technology and coupled with high performance additives and specialty grade inorganic pigments, Kynar Aquatec® is highly resistant to color fading, dirt pickup, staining, algae, mold, fungal growth and erosion.

“This warranty is unique to the architectural coatings industry,” said Mike Couchie, Vice President of Sales, APV Engineered Coatings. “It offers more than other warranties because we wanted to show just how much we stand behind the coating. Although we warrant the color performance for 15 years, the Kynar® technology has been performing for over 30 years in harsh UV-prone environments without requiring re-coating.”

The warranty is one reason that Solano Community College in California chose the product to recoat its relatively new but severely chalked and faded Vallejo and Vacaville Center campuses. NeverFade® helped the college save more than $48,000. If the college had selected a premium latex exterior paint, they likely would have had to recoat every five years, at a cost of $16,000-$18,000 per job.

The product and its cost-savings potential were also recognized this year by prestigious national publisher, BUILDINGS Magazine, as a recipient of its 2017 Money-Saving Products award.

New Formula for Architectural Metal Applications

Earlier this year, APV launched a new NeverFade® topcoat to completely restore metal facades so that they look and perform just as though they have a new factory finish. The new topcoat is called NeverFade® Metal Restoration Topcoat and it supplements the industry-proven NeverFade® Original Topcoat which is for concrete, stucco, masonry, fiber cement, composite materials and vinyl building exteriors. Like the original, it is water-based and meets SCAQMD Rule 1113 VOC limits in Southern California for industrial maintenance coatings, with less than 100 grams/liter of VOCs. NeverFade® Metal Restoration Topcoat can be used with APV’s complementary W-1650 Bonding Primer for previously coated surfaces, such as Kynar 500® or silicon polyester finishes, as well as APV’s W-1500 Universal Primer for a variety of substrates. The primers contain less than 50 grams/liter of VOCs, meeting SCAQMC Rule 1113 VOC limits for Southern California. The water-based topcoat also can be used with APV’s two-component corrosion resistant epoxy primer for extreme, corrosive weather environments. This product contains VOC exempt solvents to comply with SCAQMC Rule 1113 VOC limits.

NeverFade® with Kynar® Coating System Awarded as “Money Saving Product” By National Facility Management Publisher

BUILDINGS Magazine Selects APV Engineered Coatings Product for Elite Group

AKRON, Ohio (June 13, 2017) — BUILDINGS Magazine, the leading national publication serving the professional facility management industry, has selected NeverFade® Exterior Coating from APV Engineered Coatings as recipient of its 2017 Money-Saving Products award. The magazine’s editorial staff chose NeverFade® Exterior Coating with Kynar Aquatec® resin for its cost-savings potential and relevance to commercial building management.

The product is a member of an elite group of 41 products showcased in the June 2017 issue of BUILDINGS and online at www.BUILDINGS.com. Finalists were evaluated by the BUILDINGS editorial staff for the money-saving qualities they offer to building owners and facility managers in areas such as energy efficiency, water savings, and maintenance.

“Everyone at APV is honored and thrilled that this prestigious national publisher has recognized NeverFade®,” said Erin Brown, Director of Marketing and Business Development, APV Engineered Coatings.

NeverFade® Exterior Coatings are a line of water-based, low-VOC exterior coating for metal, concrete, stucco, masonry and vinyl siding applications. The coatings contain Kynar Aquatec®, a PVDF resin known as a tough, engineering thermoplastic that maintains high stability when exposed to harsh thermal, chemical and ultraviolet environments. They resist fading, dirt, staining, algae, mold, fungal growth and corrosion. APV Engineered Coatings manufactures each batch of NeverFade® to order and custom color matches the product to the customer’s specifications.

“We are so confident in the performance of NeverFade® that we offer a 15-year warranty on fade performance,” says Brown. “This warranty is unique because it doesn’t just cover the cost of the product. It also covers labor costs.”

As an example of the money-savings potential of the NeverFade® Exterior Coating System, Brown points to Solano Community College in Vallejo, Calif. The college was able to save more than $48,000 in paint and labor costs by choosing the product to repaint its relatively new, but severely faded building. If the college had selected a premium latex exterior paint, they likely would have had to repaint every five years, at a cost of $16,000-$18,000 per paint job.

“Fifteen years is quite a long time for paint to sustain its color in the type of high UV-exposed environment we have,” said the college’s facility manager. “That longevity saves us a tremendous amount in maintenance costs and labor. And that doesn’t even take into account the ‘soft costs’ associated with the building’s appearance.”

In April, APV Engineered Coatings extended the NeverFade® product line with NeverFade® Façade Restoration for architectural metal applications. The new line consists of primer and Kynar®-based topcoat systems for use with carbon steel, stainless steel, bare aluminum and anodized aluminum in water and solvent-based formulations.

APV Engineered Coatings Introduces NeverFade® Façade Restoration For Architectural Metal Applications

AKRON, Ohio (4/19/2017) — APV Engineered Coatings has launched a new line of primer and topcoat systems under the NeverFade® brand name for restoration of architectural metal structures such as wall panels, window and door frames, roofs, railings, overhangs and decorative features. Available in water based formulations with Kynar Aquatec® and solvent based formulations with Kynar® PVDF, the new NeverFade® Façade Restoration coatings are ideal for use with carbon steel, stainless steel, bare aluminum and anodized aluminum.

These robust coating systems resist UV degradation, abrasion, corrosion, mold growth, dirt and staining. They resist chalking and maintain their color (even with dark colors and earth tones) so well that APV offers a 15-year warranty for fade performance. The warranty covers replacement product as well as labor costs.

“Our NeverFade® original formulation was initially launched for concrete, stucco, masonry and vinyl siding applications,” said Mike Couchie, vice president, sales, APV Coatings. “Now, we’re offering a restoration system that will help commercial and industrial property owners completely restore metal facades so they look and perform just as though they had a new factory finish. Although we warrant the product to perform against fading for 15 years, it should perform against the elements for up to 30 years.”

“These advantages are just some of the reasons NeverFade Façade Restoration systems have been chosen for applications such as the scoreboards in EverBank Field in Jacksonville and buildings and structures at the Marion County School System in Ocala, Florida,” he added.

Water- and Solvent-Based Formulations

The product line’s water-based metal restoration coatings are formulated with Kynar Aquatec® emulsion from Arkema. It meets SCAQMD Rule 1113 VOC limits in Southern California for industrial maintenance coatings, with only 40-100 grams/liter of VOCs, depending on color. The coating can be used with APV’s complementary W-1650 bonding primer for previously coated fluoropolymer surfaces, such as Kynar 500® resin-based coatings, which demonstrates excellent adhesion. The primer contains 50 grams/liter of VOCs, meeting SCAQMC Rule 1113 VOC limits for Southern California of 100 grams/liter of VOCs. The water-based topcoat also can be used with APV’s W-1500 universal primer and APV’s two component corrosion-resistant epoxy primer. This product contains exempt solvents to meet SCAQMC Rule 1113 VOC limits.

The solvent-based metal restoration coatings are formulated with Kynar ADS® II resin from Arkema. It dries in 10-15 minutes and sets up and hardens quickly. The coating can be used with APV’s complementary two component corrosion-resistant epoxy primer, a robust primer that provides an exceptional bond to metal and concrete surfaces.

“Kynar® PVDF resin-based coatings have over 50 years of demonstrated weathering and UV resistance in both wet and dry climates. The longevity of these coatings is due to the chemistry of Kynar® PVDF,” said Ron Partridge, senior account manager, Arkema, Inc. “They resist degradation and erosion, and they inherently resist mold, mildew, staining and chemical pollution, while coatings made with other polymeric binders can severely chalk and fade within a few years.”

Custom Colors

All NeverFade® Façade Restoration formulas are custom color-matched to order. They are available in flat, eggshell, and semi-gloss sheens. The coatings are ready to use as supplied and come in 1-gallon cans, 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums. They can be applied with a brush, roller or conventional spray equipment.

Solano Community College Saves $48,000+ on Vallejo Center Paint Job with NeverFade® Paint from APV Engineered Coatings

APV Offers Industry-Exclusive 15-Year Paint-and-Labor Guarantee

VALLEJO, Calif. (September 27, 2016) — Faced with the prospect of having to repaint a relatively new, but severely faded building three times over a 15-year period, facility management at Solano Community College decided to try a different approach: take advantage of a 15-year paint-and-labor warranty on NeverFade® paint from APV Engineered Coatings. The result? Savings of more than $48,000.

Solano Community College’s Vallejo Center campus is located on the San Pablo Bay, northeast of San Francisco, an area known for ocean-driven fog, wind and moisture, coupled with sunny, hot and windy afternoons. The weather conditions caused the building’s exterior —originally painted with a premium acrylic latex paint — to fade from a bright, “Solano Safety Blue” to a tired, battleship grey in just five years. Even a light touch of the walls left a chalky residue on the hands.

“The building’s curb appeal was lackluster, to put it mildly, and we started to get complaints from students, community members and our board of trustees,” said James Buchanan, director of facilities for Solano Community College. “We didn’t relish the thought — or the expense — of having to repaint the building every five years. When we learned about the 15-year guarantee on NeverFade, it was an easy choice.”

NeverFade is a water-based, low-VOC exterior coating. It contains Kynar Aquatec® resin, a tough, engineering thermoplastic that does not degrade when exposed to harsh ultraviolet, thermal and chemical pollution environments. It resists fading, chalking, dirt, staining, algae, mold, and fungal growth and helps protect substrates from corrosion in marine environments.

“We are so confident in the performance of NeverFade that we offer a 15-year warranty against fading,” says Erin Brown, director of Marketing and Business Development, APV Engineered Coatings, who notes that the company custom-blends each batch of NeverFade to match the customer’s color specifications. “This warranty is unique because it doesn’t just cover the cost of the product. It also covers labor costs.”

For Solano Community College’s Vallejo Center, those costs were estimated to be $16,000-$18,000 per paint job — a significant expense if the building needed to be repainted every five years. Not included in that expense are the “soft costs” associated with the building’s appearance.

“We want to make our campus attractive to students and the community so it’s a good learning environment and a place people want to be,” Buchanan says. “Now, thanks to the NeverFade paint job, the Vallejo Center looks fabulous. Everyone is impressed with the striking color.”
