Innovative Products, Additional Capacity Fueled Record Growth For APV Engineered Coatings in 2018

AKRON, Ohio (January 23, 2019) – The year 2018 marked several important milestones for APV Engineered Coatings. Not only did the company celebrate its 140th anniversary of service, it also had its highest sales revenue in its history with a six percent year-over-year growth rate.

APV experienced the largest year-over-year sales growth in three primary industry segments: aerospace (+18 percent); flexible vinyl, films and textile (+16.5 percent); and tire and rubber manufacturing (+4.25 percent). While much of this growth was attributed to APV’s 400+ existing customers, new business was also up in 2018, by four percent.

“As the global economy expanded in 2018, APV was in a good position to meet the increased production demands of manufacturers and key customers,” said Thomas Venarge, President, APV Engineered Coatings. “Many of those customers turned to APV for innovative product developments for niche applications. Some of these niche applications include a binder solution for lithium ion battery electrodes, maskant slurries and products for high temperature diffusion coating of turbine blades, anti-graffiti coatings for rolled vinyl, and high performance PVDF-based topcoats for composite building products…it’s truly diverse.”

Increased Manufacturing Capacity

APV continued its ongoing capacity expansion in 2018 by investing in new production equipment. This included seven new high-speed dispersers, located throughout the plant, that allowed the company to quickly and flexibly scale production to meet rapid-turn orders of any size, from 50 to 2,000-gallon batches. This additional production equipment helped support the approximate 1.7 million gallons of finished product APV produced in 2018.

The company currently boasts about 185,000 square feet of manufacturing space, 62,000 square feet of warehouse space and 4,500 square feet of laboratory space over its 22-acre campus. Plans call for APV to build an additional 19,000 square foot warehouse in 2019, which will free about 6,000 square feet of existing warehouse for manufacturing. This is in addition to the 33,000-square-foot warehouse building that was finalized in July 2018.

“APV is committed to expanding our physical presence in Akron’s industrial community and to supporting similar expansion by other industrial companies here,” Venarge said. “For example, APV is partnering with county and city officials, the Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce, First Energy and Pleasant Valley Corp. to redevelop 20.5 acres of land owned by Akron and APV into an industrial site called Firestone Business Park. The goal of the project is to continue to grow commerce and create jobs in the area, and we officially broke ground last month.”

Industry Accolades

APV also was recognized in 2018 with awards for two of the company’s leading brands:

NeverFade® Exterior Restoration Coatings won a Product Innovation Award and a Special Citation for Sustainability from Architectural Products Magazine. NeverFade® was recognized for its excellent warranty and service life as well as for being naturally sustainable with its long lifecycle and low VOC content.

• VYNGUARD® Polycarbonate Anti-Microbial Coatings received a Top Product designation in the Specialty Function Coatings category as part of the inaugural PaintSquare Prestige Award, for the product’s value to the industry.

“We are honored that industry experts have chosen APV Engineered Coatings’ products as worthy recipients of these prestigious awards,” Venarge concluded. “It’s a testament to our talented 100+ employees and to the customer-focused innovation that drives APV to succeed.”

Westin® Tampa Waterside Restores Exterior with Long-Lasting Coating System

TAMPA BAY, Fla. (8/3/2018) — The Westin Tampa Waterside Hotel recently completed the restoration of its exterior that extended the service life of its façade by 25-30 years. Using NeverFade® Façade Restoration Coatings with Kynar Aquatec® from APV Engineered Coatings gave the hotel a much-needed facelift. And they did it at a much lower cost than replacing the brick façade and window profiles or having to repaint the exterior every three to five years, which is a typical coating lifecycle in Florida.

HEI Hotels & Resorts, the hotel’s owner/operator, also took advantage of a unique, 15-year color performance warranty from APV. The warranty, which is fully transferrable to future owners, covers both replacement product and the labor costs to re-coat if the Delta-E (ΔE, or Total Color Difference) of the coating shifts by a unit of five or more.

Strong Color Performance in Harsh Environment

The Westin is no stranger to the effects of rain, wind, high humidity, saltwater corrosion, bright sun and soaring temperatures. Indeed, most owners of commercial and institutional buildings in the area are well acquainted with rapid fading and chalking of painted exteriors — a problem that can be costly and time-consuming to fix, as well as cause disruption to building occupants and visitors.

When the Westin experienced interior damage due to water penetration through its brick façade, HEI Hotels & Resorts turned to coating contractor Stuart Dean and NeverFade® from APV. Not only did they want to improve the building’s weatherproofing, they also wanted to give the hotel a fresh, new look that would last for years.

“Fifteen years without severe fading and chalking in the Gulf Coast of Florida is traditionally unheard of,” explains Mike Couchie, Vice President of Sales, APV Engineered Coatings. “Even with high-performance urethanes and 100 percent acrylic-latex coatings, the pigment and binder usually begin to break down after a couple years, leaving a significant shift in color and chalky residue on the surface. If left alone, paint will eventually deteriorate completely, leaving the building’s substrate bare and open to damage from the elements, which is a very costly problem to repair.”

The coating system’s long-lasting performance is due, in part, to the inclusion of Kynar Aquatec®. The tough and industry-proven PVDF resin resists thermal, chemical and ultraviolet degradation. Kynar Aquatec® has been weathering in the field and in a Miami-based natural weathering testing site for 18 years to date. However, the resin’s first-generation technology, Kynar 500®, has been performing for over 50 years in harsh UV-prone environments with exceptional color retention.

Serving as the backbone of NeverFade® coating technology, coupled with high performance additives and specialty grade inorganic pigments, Kynar Aquatec® is highly resistant to UV degradation, chalking, dirt pickup, staining, algae, mold, fungal growth and erosion. Applied with the compatible primer systems offered by APV, the NeverFade® coating system can even protect against rust, corrosion, and efflorescence, as well as promote long-term adhesion to the building surface.

For the Westin property, APV custom-blended its NeverFade® Original Topcoat in custom-colored Westin Tan for use on the hotel’s brick surfaces and NeverFade® Metal Restoration Topcoat in custom-colored Westin Granite for the window profiles. Custom-tinted W-1500 Universal Primer in a different hue of the topcoat colors were used on both the brick and the window profiles.

Minimizing Guest Inconvenience

HEI Hotels & Resorts wanted to make sure that the façade restoration project would have minimal impact on room reservations and guest activities. Typically, odors are a major concern and point of complaint for building occupants during this type of renovation. Because NeverFade® coatings are water-borne, low VOCs and low odor, the project was completed with no impact on room reservations and hotel use by guests.

“Unlike competitive products that require a spray application, NeverFade® was applied by roller and brush, which allowed us to eliminate overspray. We also were able to avoid complaints and an inconvenience for people entering and leaving the building,” said Rex Dean, Global Director, Façade Restoration, Stuart Dean, the coating contractor for the project.

“In addition to the strong warranty and attractive appearance of the coating system, we were pleased that NeverFade® does not emit harsh solvents into the air, allowing us to not impact our guests’ experience with odors during the application period,” said Rob Willis, SVP Design & Construction, HEI Hotels & Resorts. “Another benefit of applying a water-based system was that it fits our culture to be green-conscious and eco-friendly where we can.”

On Time and On Budget

Although the project was briefly interrupted for the passing of hurricane Irma, the Stuart Dean crew finished the project quickly and efficiently, in about five months.

The property now has a fresh, lighter and brighter new look. The project was so well received by everyone involved that HEI Hotels & Resorts is considering using NeverFade® Metal Restoration Coatings for the hotel’s metal roof, which has areas of significant coating degradation.

APV Engineered Coatings Celebrates 140 Years of Partnerships and Performance

AKRON, Ohio (3/7/18) — Rutherford B. Hayes was president and Thomas Edison was granted a patent for the phonograph the year two Akron-area businessmen, J. Martin Beck and Edward G. Kubler, founded APV Engineered Coatings under the name Akron Varnish Works. From a small manufacturing site in the heart of downtown Akron, the company produced a small line of wood varnishes and black enamels for a variety of goods.

Today, 140 years after its 1878 founding, the company that is now APV Engineered Coatings has evolved to become one of the nation’s leading manufacturers and engineers of niche industrial coatings and advanced chemical products for factory- and field-applied applications. The company also contract-manufactures products for some of the largest paint and coating manufacturers. APV creates products that touch virtually every aspect of people’s lives.

“We are proud of our roots in Akron and in our continued growth as we invent, manufacture and provide unique solutions for just about every industry on the planet, from aerospace and automotive, to building products, government applications, and other niche markets,” said Thomas Venarge, President, APV Engineered Coatings.

Early Growth

Two seminal events in the transportation industry fueled the company’s growth around the turn of the 20th century: the 1893 invention of the “safety bicycle” and the introduction of Ford®’s Model-T in 1912. APV reaped the benefits of the bicycle boom as more than half of the nation’s bikes were finished with enamel from Akron Varnish Works. The company also enjoyed outstanding prosperity supplying a black “Japan”, a high-temperature baking enamel that provided a shiny aesthetic to the Ford® Model-T.

In 1912, the company moved from downtown Akron to its current site in South Akron, where over the years, it has increased its footprint, adding laboratory, warehouse and office space. In 1935, company stockholders changed the firm’s name to The Akron Paint & Varnish Company to reflect its
new line of paints and varnishes and expanding sales into the tire industry, airline industry and products for government applications.

A New Identity

In 1982, David Venarge purchased Akron Paint & Varnish and became the company’s president. The company started focusing more on the engineered coatings market and in the 1990s, once again altered its name to APV Engineered Coatings, a fitting recognition for its continued research, development and engineering orientation. In 2010, David Venarge became Chairman of APV and appointed Thomas Venarge as president.

“Our philosophy is simple: mutually beneficial partnerships,” said Thomas Venarge. “We work as true partners with our customers, providing not only advanced industrial coating and chemical formulations, but also custom equipment engineering, contract manufacturing and global product distribution. We’re ready for any challenge and enjoy working with our customer partners from the R&D stage, to testing and production trials, through full commercial production.”

While the company directly markets most of the products it manufactures, it also has a successful contract manufacturing business that produces formulations under private label for both small firms and some of the largest companies in the world.

“We play a crucial role in helping these companies get their products to market on time and on budget,” said Venarge. “We have the manufacturing capacity and quick turnaround times they need, the process control and engineering expertise to bring it all together, custom packaging and worldwide distribution services, and the ability to retain inventory and batch history for as long as customers request. We put as much care into the contract formulas we manufacture as we put into the formulas we develop for our own brands.”

“Fewer and fewer companies are offering the type of service we do,” Venarge added. “Back in the 1960s, there were probably 3,500 paint manufacturers in the country. As the industry became more regulated, and the barriers to entry grew, the number of manufacturers reduced considerably. APV is still privately held and has remained strong and committed to the industry.”

Manufacturing Capabilities

APV Engineered Coatings has more than doubled in size and tripled in capacity over the last 20 years, with more than 50 percent capacity increase in the last five years alone. On average, the company
currently produces about 1.5 million gallons of product a year from a 15-acre R&D and manufacturing facility in South Akron.

With more than 300 pieces of manufacturing equipment over 150,000 square feet of manufacturing space, the company can accommodate everything from pint-sized samples and small batch runs to large-scale, tanker-truck-sized production output.

Products OEM and after market applications currently produced at APV Engineered Coatings include:

  • Adhesives
  • Binders, concentrates and slurries
  • Industrial crayons
  • Screen-printed decals
  • Dyes
  • Forging lubricants
  • Industrial Inks
  • Inspection markers
  • Maskant materials for aerospace components
  • Custom engineered paints and coatings
  • High performance architectural coatings
  • Custom primers
  • Tire and rubber paints and lubricants

Supporting the Akron Manufacturing Community

APV Engineered Coatings’ ability to meet quick turn-around times for contract customers while also maintaining production capacity for its own brands is a testament to the investments the company has made in recent years. It currently employs between 100-120 people at its Akron plant, with about 10 percent of its staff working as chemists.

“We continue to invest in our facilities to meet the future demands of our customers,” said Venarge. “We’re also investing in the future of the manufacturing industry here in Akron. We’re currently renovating a 32,000-square-foot addition for more warehouse space and have plans on the drawing board for another 44,000-square-foot manufacturing and warehouse facility.”

“Akron, and especially the newly coined Firestone Business Park, is a perfect location for creating manufacturing jobs,” Venarge added. “It’s close to interstates and rail access, and there are
several opportunities for re-development. We’re committed to Akron, and are working to keep existing industrial companies in the area as well as attract new ones. Our vision at APV is to be the ‘model home’ in a vibrant new neighborhood.”

  • block 100% of plasticizer migration
  • be customized to suit each customer’s performance criteria
  • provide protection against the elements for well over ten years
  • sustain the coated product’s aesthetics.

As a result, products coated with Vynguard® Weldable PVDF have a longer useful life, lower cost of ownership and maintain their visual appeal throughout their use. In addition, Vynguard® Weldable PVDF is the only coating of its type offered in both solvent-based and water-based formulations. Using the eco-friendly water-based formulation can substantially lower a company’s environmental remediation costs.

The unique chemistry of Vynguard® Weldable PVDF allows the customer and APV to collaborate on the product’s formulation to produce a coating tailored to the customer’s specific needs, helping to create differentiation and a unique selling advantage.

“We’re thrilled to see our development efforts come to fruition and expect great things from this product,” said Michael Couchie, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for APV Engineered Coatings. “Flexible roofing, flexible decking, tent, awning, media and signage, automotive and marine upholstery – these are a few of the markets where we see tremendous opportunity for Vynguard® Weldable PVDF.”

“This is an exciting time for APV,” added Erin Brown, Marketing Director at APV Engineered Coatings. “We’ve spent the last three years testing and proving out the benefits of Vynguard® Weldable PVDF with one large customer and a few other prospects, so we are now we’re ready to go to market with this superior technology.”

Vynguard® Weldable PVDF is engineered to be applied using gravure, reverse roll, or knife-over-roll. The product is developed and manufactured at APV’s facility in Akron, Ohio, and is shipped to domestic and international desinations.
