APV offers a full line of coatings for flexible vinyls and all are custom made. They include vinyl acrylics, pvdf-fluoropolymers, single component self-crosslinking polyurethanes, and two-component polyurethanes.

In the automotive industry, APV typically works with dashboards, door panels, and seating surfaces.

A clear, water-proofing protectant that is abrasion and mar resistant and prevents UV fading and does not alter the original color of the product.

APV offers several topcoat options for flexible vinyl, depending on performance requirements. These coatings can also be customized to meet your specific needs.

High Performance Topcoats: Stain resistant, heat sealable barrier coatings

• Fluoropolymers
• Urethanes
• Vinyl Acrylics

BARRIER COATING for OUTDOOR VINYL

SELF CLEANING
It has been found that the barrier properties and unique surface energy of this coating formulation allow wind and rain to purge environmental debris from the surface. The result is a “self cleaning” and stain resistant product that requires no maintenance.

BACK LIT LAMINATES
To achieve maximum cosmetic service life, both sides of vinyl laminates, designed for back lit applications, should be coated. Surface deterioration due to plasticizer migration and/or biological activity, on the back side of a translucent laminate, will be visible upon back lighting.

HEAT SEALING
Heat sealing with hot air sealers requires an increase in air temperature. If air temperature is set at 850 F for uncoated vinyl then increase it to 950 F for coated vinyl. Ratio Frequency (RF) sealers require either an increase in dwell time or a higher frequency.

APPLICATION and STORAGE
This solvent based coating can be ordered as a concentrate or print ready. The standard gravure ready version is supplied in MEK at a Zahn #2 viscosity of 20 seconds. All versions have excellent flow and leveling properties. A 5 micron gravure pad coat (100% coverage) can easily be achieved and provides an excellent barrier. Pigmented versions serve as an outdoor, weatherable ink.

Various solvent systems are available. The HAPS free, EPA compliant solvent blend (<4.8 pounds VOC per gallon) will allow vinyl coating lines to be operated without solvent recovery or incinerator systems, i.e., solvent fumes can be vented directly to the atmosphere. Flammability is an issue that must be addressed in all versions. (Hazard Class 3/Packing Group 11).

Sealed containers, that prevent solvent evaporation, may be stored for many years. Viscosity will increase over time. The increase in viscosity depends on the storage temperature and the solvent system used. Low temperature storage will accelerate viscosity gain. Mixing with sufficient energy will restore the original viscosity if the % solids are within specification.

VYNGUARD is a high performance solvent based fluoropolymer coating that is transparent, stain resistant and heat sealable barrier coating for flexible vinyl.

Flexible vinyl film with a 5 micron 1.2 mil coating of VYNGUARD will retain its gloss level and physical properties during long term outdoor exposure. VYNGUARD is designed to cope with humidity and to resist the attack of flora and fauna. VYNGUARD is available in an EPA compliant version with a VOC of 1.64 lb/gallon. It is also available in MEK.

VYNGUARD WEATHER TESTING

White, outdoor flexible vinyl has been subjected to 4000 hours of carbon arc testing without change in color or gloss.

Atlas QUV (A bulb) Weather-O-Meter1 studies were conducted on yellow vinyl laminate designed for backlit awning. Samples of this test laminate were coated with 0.2 mil Fluorolar 240 MEKCON. Uncoated samples were tested along side the coated samples as a control for comparison.

2000 Hours
•Control specimens start to color shift and measurable decrease in gloss
•Fluorolar 240 MEKCON – no change in color or gloss

7000 Hours
•Control specimens color shifted to brown
•VYNGUARD coated samples show no gloss or color change

8000 Hours
•VYNGUARD coated samples slight decrease in gloss and still no change in color

VYNGUARD APPLICATION RECOMMENDATIONS:
VYNGUARD is a concentrate, i.e., it is designed to be diluted or “let down” with an equal volume of either MEK or acetone.

Recommend mixing one (1) gallon of VYNGUARD with one (1) gallon of MEK to achieve a suitable viscosity for gravure coating. Most coating facilities will use a Zahn #2 cup to measure viscosity on line.

The target viscosity for gravure application is 40 CP at 75 F or 20-30 seconds with a Zahn #2 cup at 75 F.

This coating functions as a transparent, heat sealable and weatherable barrier that stops the migration of plasticizer from flexible vinyl. In order to have a barrier, the coating must cover 100% of the surface. The most efficient coating thickness is 0.2 mil (5 microns). This is commonly referred to as a “pad coat” and can be achieved using a 100 line gravure roll (shell) without the doctor blade.
