Facilities Alert: 3 Things to Know About Cleaning & Disinfecting Wallcoverings During The COVID-19 Pandemic and Flu Season

Upgraded efforts to maintain clean and healthy facilities may result in damage to the surfaces being disinfected, according to protective coating chemists at APV Engineered Coatings. The issue is particularly acute with coated vinyl wallcoverings used in healthcare, education and hospitality facilities, where the strong disinfectant agents used to combat viruses like COVID-19 can degrade the coating film on the wallcovering’s surface, weakening its protective performance.

“As Americans return to work, school and travel this fall, facility managers and maintenance professionals will also ramp-up their cleaning and disinfecting protocols for commonly touched surfaces,” said Ryan Scott, product development manager, APV Engineered Coatings. “At the same time, they need to be careful that frequently-applied, high-concentration disinfectants don’t lessen the protective functionality of the coatings used on those surfaces.”

Manufacturers of commercial wallcoverings coat their products to make them more durable and resist against dirt, stains, chemicals and moisture. Some coatings, such as the VYNGUARD® Polycarbonate Topcoat with Anti-Microbial from APV, also resist the growth of mold, mildew, and bacteria – an important consideration in damp environments and communal settings. While cleaning coated wallcoverings under normal protocols should not damage them, the impact of more frequent cleaning with harsher chemical concentrations could be a concern.

Before Cleaning and Disinfecting
Scott offers three important pieces of advice for facility professionals who want to maintain the integrity of their buildings’ wallcoverings while also complying with current, stricter cleaning and disinfecting protocols.

    1.Know what type of wallcovering you have. Not all commercial wallcoverings are the same, and some are more durable than others in resisting the mechanical effects of cleaning. The right coating can help to improve the durability of each type of wallcovering. Type I wallcoverings are light-duty and typically used in apartment and office buildings, hotel rooms, waiting rooms and other budget-conscious projects, as well as for ceilings and areas of light abrasion. Type II wallcoverings are used for heavier-traffic applications in hospitality, healthcare, office buildings, retail, education and other facility interiors and are designed to stand up to average to heavy scuffing. Type III wallcoverings are the most durable and are used in extremely heavy traffic locations as well as wainscot and other low areas exposed to movable equipment or rough abrasion, such as hospital corridors and elevator banks.
    2.Know if your wallcovering is coated.
    Not all wallcovering manufacturers use durable protective coatings on their products. Instead, they prioritize low cost or initial aesthetics over long lifecycle, durability, and stain and chemical resistance. Harsh disinfectants can degrade the wallcovering and allow the vinyl’s plasticizers to migrate to the surface, shortening its usable life. Facilities professionals can learn more about the coating used on their wallcovering by contacting the wallcovering manufacturer and asking for results of key industry tests, including the ASTM F793 Standard Classification of Wallcovering by Durability Characteristics and the ASTM D-1308 Standard Method for Test for Effect of Household Chemicals on Clear and Pigmented Organic Finishes.
    3. Know your cleaner/disinfectant concentration and application frequency.Common disinfectants include quaternary ammonium salts (QAS), isopropyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, peroxide and chlorine (bleach). Effective concentrations of these types of anti-microbials can be found on the container of an EPA-approved disinfectant and are also outlined by CDC guidelines, both of which should be referenced against cleaning/disinfecting procedures provided by the wallcovering manufacturer. The EPA is a particularly valuable source of information for identifying disinfectants approved to work as intended and their effective concentrations. Facility professionals should be aware that the germ- and virus-killing action of these disinfectants—which kill the bacteria by being absorbed into its cell walls and damaging the membrane—can also degrade the wallcovering’s coating, especially when used more often or at higher concentrations than recommended.

APV Engineered Coatings Demonstrated Agility & Resiliency in 2020

AKRON, Ohio (1/25/2021) – APV Engineered Coatings started 2021 ready to build on the gains it experienced during one of the most challenging years in recent history. The company – an essential business that remained open and operating during the COVID-19 pandemic – pivoted to help meet public health needs while continuing to serve its customer base with specialty chemical products that contributed to the economy and kept other businesses moving forward.

Manufacturing Milestones

APV’s manufacturing headquarters in Akron became an EPA-Registered Facility in 2020, receiving its designation as EPA Establishment No.96197-oh-1. The registration certifies the company’s production of pesticides and active ingredients in a designated facility.

In March, as the COVID pandemic swept the world and demand for cleaning and sanitizing products skyrocketed, APV’s field service engineering team designed and built a new multi-head filling line inside a renovated 6,000 square foot area of the facility to be used for disinfectant production. The line, which is still in operation, has produced over 1 million gallons of surface disinfectants under private label for several customers that needed to quickly increase capacity to meet critical health and safety needs.

“We were honored to contribute to the emergent public health crisis by helping disinfectant manufacturers ramp up their production output,” said Mike Couchie, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, APV Engineered Coatings. “Our new, safe manufacturing and filling line was operational in record time to streamline throughput and sustain quality for our contract partners.”

APV’s private label and contract manufacturing, which grew 30 percent year-over-year in 2020, represents 31 percent of APV’s total revenues, an increase of 9 percent over 2019.

In other facility news, the company also completed the construction of an additional warehouse, which brings 20,000 square feet of warehouse space to its 14-acre campus. The warehouse was built to house materials and packaging necessary to support the increase in production volume.

 
Product Innovations

APV continued its focus on creating new custom chemical formulations for a range of unique applications in 2020. For example, the company:

  • Formulated innovative VYNGUARD® Durable Water Repellent (DWR) hydrophobic coatings for outdoor fabrics, clothing, and personal protective apparel.
  • Expanded VYNGUARD® Anti-Microbial coating chemistries with extreme resistance to disinfectants and cleaners for vinyl wallcovering, contract seating, and other applications.
  • Introduced a new UV-curable technology in the VYNGUARD® brand for marine and automotive fabric, such as covers, Bimini tops, as well as convertible and jeep soft tops.
  • Customized formulations under the KAPGUARD® line of high-performance PVDF-based coatings for building products made of polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, fiberglass reinforced plastic and other materials.
  • Created a highly unique anti-microbial coating for high-purity air filtration systems.

In addition to the successful launch of these new products, APV saw sales of existing products increase in 2020. The company’s NeverFade® brand enjoyed a 205 percent year-over-year sales growth, helping the company’s total portfolio of architectural building products achieve a 15 percent year-over-year sales growth. The architectural building products portfolio now represents 10 percent of APV’s total revenues, a growth of two percent over 2019.

APV demonstrated flexibility in 2020 as many industry events and conferences switched to online formats. For example, the company exhibited at the first virtual IFAI Expo in November.

APV, along with its supplier partner Arkema, Inc., also worked with the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) to develop a new specification that raises the bar for color retention. The SSPC Paint 47 standard was officially approved and issued at the end of December.

“This is the first standard for high-performance, field-applied coatings in darker and saturated colors,” said Couchie. “APV contributed to the effort by providing samples of NeverFade® for a blind study comparing different coating chemistries.”

APV, one of PCI Magazine’s Top 25 North American Paint Manufacturers, had its fair share of industry accolades in 2020 as well.

It received a PaintSquare Elevation Award in the Renovation/Retrofit category for a façade restoration project at the Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options facility in Sunrise, Fla. The project used NeverFade® Coatings with Kynar Aquatec® to give the 43,000-square-foot facility a fresh, welcoming new look and a 30-year extended service life.

APV also won the 2020 Metal Architecture Design Award in the Renovations and Retrofit category for a project that used NeverFade® Coatings to give a clean, factory-like finish to the anodized aluminum exterior of a 45-year-old, 18-story, Class-A office building in Newport Beach, California.

High-Performance, Water-Based Field-Applied Organic Finishes for Architectural Façade Restoration: Sustainability Never Looked So Good

Based on coating technology that has been an architectural industry standard for over five decades, water-based field-applied coatings made with Kynar Aquatec® resin are helping extend the lifetime of commercial buildings in an environmentally friendly way.

Replacing building façade materials can be a costly, time-consuming and disruptive endeavor. Fortunately, building owners and project specifiers now have a more efficient, cost-effective and sustainable way to extend the life of building exteriors with less disruption to tenants and activities than completely replacing façade materials. To realize how, it is important to understand the history behind the coating technology that has been trusted by the architectural community for decades.

In 1965, Arkema, Inc. introduced Kynar 500® based architectural finishes to the market, and over the next 30 years they became the coating of choice for architectural firms worldwide. However, they are solvent-based, with high VOC content. In addition, because Kynar 500® emulsion-based finishes must be baked at over 400oF, they can only be applied in a factory to metal coil and extrusion substrates. This limited their ability to be used on other OEM building products that could not withstand the temperature, like wood, vinyl and fiberglass. It also did not allow for field-applied use.

Kynar Aquatec® – The next generation of PVDF coatings

In 2001, Arkema addressed these initial limitations and began to develop a novel emulsion coatings technology that became Kynar Aquatec®.

The original goals of the program were to develop a resin that could be incorporated into a coating that could air-dry with long-term weathering performance similar to a Kynar 500® finish system but in a water-based formulation that required no baking and would film-form at ambient temperatures.

These objectives and ensuing technical development work led to the 2005 commercialization of the first Kynar Aquatec® grade called Kynar Aquatec® ARC. This tough, engineered thermoplastic resin that is inherently UV-resistant found its earliest uses in coatings used in metal restoration projects and OEM building products. In 2009, Arkema launched Kynar Aquatec® FMA12 for coatings used on cementitious and other substrates where breathability and/or greater elastic properties were needed. Arkema’s most recent offering in the Kynar Aquatec® line is called Kynar Aquatec® CRX. This resin was developed for applications requiring greater hardness, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance since it can be cross-linked with a second component.

Today, Kynar Aquatec® has become an innovative platform of emulsions used by paint formulators, like APV Engineered Coatings (Arkema’s first licensee), to make premium, low-VOC, weather-resistant, water-based coatings. Coatings formulated with these emulsions can provide the durability and performance of traditional factory-applied Kynar 500® based coatings. Coatings formulated with Kynar Aquatec® can be applied in the field to a variety of substrates, including metals, plastics, wood, concrete, stucco, EIFS and previously painted surfaces. Moreover, Kynar Aquatec® resin is manufactured through an innovative and patented process that uses no PFAS surfactants or any other fluorosurfactants in its ingredients or manufacturing process.

Figure 1: Nineteen years ago, a side-by-side comparison of Kynar Aquatec® to Kynar 500® finishes (using the same inorganic pigments) was conducted. No differences were found in color change, gloss or chalking for either system, demonstrating that that Kynar Aquatec® based systems can perform similarly to a Kynar 500® finish system.

Highly Resistant to Film Erosion

One of the primary purposes of an exterior architectural coating is to protect a building’s substrate from weathering. A key indicator of this protection is maintenance of the original film thickness. Figure 2 demonstrates a Kynar Aquatec®-based coating’s ability to resist film erosion after outdoor exposure compared with an acrylic-based coating. Both formulations shown utilize cobalt blue pigment, which is not affected by ultraviolet light and does not block UV from penetrating the coating surface. Therefore, any degradation of the coating from weathering is related to the resin binder system only. After seven years of exposure in South Florida at 45° angle facing south, the metal panel is completely showing through the 100% acrylic-based coating, which demonstrates erosion and nearly complete degradation of the coating. The Kynar Aquatec®-based coating is still intact with minimal color fade and no film erosion.

Quality Control through Licensing

To ensure that final coatings made with Kynar® resins meet Arkema’s quality and performance requirements, the company established a licensing program for its Kynar Aquatec® family of water-based PVDF resins. Manufacturer and specialty coatings formulator APV Engineered Coatings became an Arkema licensee in 2009 for its line of NeverFade® Façade Restoration Coatings, which has since been used on hundreds of architectural projects and structures worldwide.

NeverFade® Façade Restoration Coatings Save Time and Money

NeverFade® is a line of water-based, low-VOC façade restoration coating systems that provide the durability of factory finish in a field-applied product. Its quality ingredients and unique ingenuity provide a 30-year life cycle, unlike any other coating on the market. The harsh Sonoran Desert Climate in Cave Creek, Arizona was no match for NeverFade®, which looked like it was freshly applied nine years after its original application to the Plaza at Black Mountain. The Plaza’s brown stucco exterior had faded to light grey then washed out completely after years of weathering, leaving the stucco exposed to high temperatures and harsh UV rays. In 2010, it was coated with a custom-blended NeverFade® Original Topcoat in Sahara Yellow. In October 2012, one of the tenants moved out and took down their sign, leaving the bare stucco exposed. Thanks to the long-lasting performance of NeverFade®, the contractor was able to fill in the small area where the sign had been, and it was a perfect match to the rest of the elevation and building.

Another tenant had hung a banner on the east side of the exterior of his shop after the building was freshly coated in 2010. When the tenant retired in mid-2019, the banner was removed and behind it, the area protected from the sun was identical in color and appearance to the rest of the wall. You could not identify that the banner had ever been on the building — after nine years.

New Video Demonstrates Anti‐Graffiti Capability of VYNGUARD® Performance Finish from APV Engineered Coatings

 

AKRON, Ohio (September 12, 2017) — Manufacturers of interior leather and upholstery components can now see performance test results for APV Engineered Coatings’ VYNGUARD® Anti‐Graffiti coating formulation. The company created a video to demonstrate how VYNGUARD® Anti‐Graffiti performs against a variety of common chemicals and stains.

“VYNGUARD® Anti‐Graffiti finishes have become popular among OEMs of interior upholstery and leather products such as contract seating and automotive components like seats, door panels and dashboards,” said Mike Couchie, VP, Sales, APV Engineered Coatings. “The coating passes 200,000 WFlex testing and 400,000 cycles of Wyzenbeek testing, providing high flexibility and abrasion resistance. It also resists blue jean dye staining without compromising its soft, premium‐leather feel. Plus, it can be formulated with anti‐bacterial and anti‐fungal additives.”

The video can be viewed at on APV’s YouTube® Channel @APVCoatings. Chemical substances tested included household cleaners, candle wax, hair dye, sidewalk deicer, bleach, crayon, marker and pen. Food stains included mustard, BBQ sauce, ketchup, blueberries, coffee, red wine, lemon juice, vegetable oil and bacon grease, as well as pink lipstick. After exposure for four hours, the surface was wiped with a dry rag, then cleaned with soap and water, an upholstery cleaner and a bleach‐and‐water solution.

Results revealed virtually no remaining residue, with the exception of faint hair dye and mustard stains. The samples were then exposed to 30 minutes of UV rays, after which both faint stains disappeared completely.

BUILDINGS Magazine Selects APV Engineered Coatings Product for Elite Group

NeverFade® Exterior Coatings are a line of water-based, low-VOC exterior coating for metal, concrete, stucco, masonry and vinyl siding applications. As an example of the money-savings potential of the NeverFade® Exterior Coating System, Brown points to Solano Community College in Vallejo, Calif. The college was able to save more than $48,000 in paint and labor costs by choosing the product to repaint its relatively new, but severely faded building. If the college had selected a premium latex exterior paint, they likely would have had to repaint every five years, at a cost of $16,000-$18,000 per paint job.

“Fifteen years is quite a long time for paint to sustain its color in the type of high UV-exposed environment we have,” said the college’s facility manager. “That longevity saves us a tremendous amount in maintenance costs and labor. And that doesn’t even take into account the ‘soft costs’ associated with the building’s appearance.”

In April, APV Engineered Coatings extended the NeverFade® product line with NeverFade® Façade Restoration for architectural metal applications. APV Engineered Coatings Introduces NeverFade® Façade Restoration For Architectural Metal Applications

 

AKRON, Ohio (4/19/2017) — APV Engineered Coatings has launched a new line of primer and topcoat systems under the NeverFade® brand name for restoration of architectural metal structures such as wall panels, window and door frames, roofs, railings, overhangs and decorative features. Available in water based formulations with Kynar Aquatec® and solvent based formulations with Kynar® PVDF, the new NeverFade® Façade Restoration coatings are ideal for use with carbon steel, stainless steel, bare aluminum and anodized aluminum.

These robust coating systems resist UV degradation, abrasion, corrosion, mold growth, dirt and staining. They resist chalking and maintain their color (even with dark colors and earth tones) so well that APV offers a 15-year warranty for fade performance. The warranty covers replacement product as well as labor costs.

“Our NeverFade® original formulation was initially launched for concrete, stucco, masonry and vinyl siding applications,” said Mike Couchie, vice president, sales, APV Coatings. “Now, we’re offering a restoration system that will help commercial and industrial property owners completely restore metal facades so they look and perform just as though they had a new factory finish. Although we warrant the product to perform against fading for 15 years, it should perform against the elements for up to 30 years.”

“These advantages are just some of the reasons NeverFade Façade Restoration systems have been chosen for applications such as the scoreboards in EverBank Field in Jacksonville and buildings and structures at the Marion County School System in Ocala, Florida,” he added.

 

Water- and Solvent-Based Formulations

The product line’s water-based metal restoration coatings are formulated with Kynar Aquatec® emulsion from Arkema. It meets SCAQMD Rule 1113 VOC limits in Southern California for industrial maintenance coatings, with only 40-100 grams/liter of VOCs, depending on color. The coating can be used with APV’s complementary W-1650 bonding primer for previously coated fluoropolymer surfaces, such as Kynar 500® resin-based coatings, which demonstrates excellent adhesion. The primer contains 50 grams/liter of VOCs, meeting SCAQMC Rule 1113 VOC limits for Southern California of 100 grams/liter of VOCs. The water-based topcoat also can be used with APV’s W-1500 universal primer and APV’s two component corrosion-resistant epoxy primer. This product contains exempt solvents to meet SCAQMC Rule 1113 VOC limits.

The solvent-based metal restoration coatings are formulated with Kynar ADS® II resin from Arkema. It dries in 10-15 minutes and sets up and hardens quickly. The coating can be used with APV’s complementary two component corrosion-resistant epoxy primer, a robust primer that provides an exceptional bond to metal and concrete surfaces.

“Kynar® PVDF resin-based coatings have over 50 years of demonstrated weathering and UV resistance in both wet and dry climates. The longevity of these coatings is due to the chemistry of Kynar® PVDF,” said Ron Partridge, senior account manager, Arkema, Inc. “They resist degradation and erosion, and they inherently resist mold, mildew, staining and chemical pollution, while coatings made with other polymeric binders can severely chalk and fade within a few years.”

 

Custom Colors

All NeverFade® Façade Restoration formulas are custom color-matched to order. They are available in flat, eggshell, and semi-gloss sheens. The coatings are ready to use as supplied and come in 1-gallon cans, 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums. They can be applied with a brush, roller or conventional spray equipment.

APV Announces VYNGUARD® Contest Winners from IFAI

AKRON, Ohio (October 28, 2016)- APV Engineered Coatings hosted a booth at the 2016 IFAI Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina last week to showcase their re-released VYNGUARD® product line.  VYNGUARD, a series of lacquer chemistries custom formulated for each customer, was originally launched for use with non-woven, vinyl substrates.  The company has now engineered additional formulations for use on specialty woven fabrics and leather hide applications.

“Flexible fabrics and vinyl manufacturing is one of our fastest growing markets and the VYNGUARD® brand is receiving excellent reviews from the industry. Our current customers have had such success in the field that we wanted to expand our presence into a broader arena… the IFAI show provided us the perfect setting to do that,” said Mike Couchie, Vice President of Sales.

APV acquired several domestic and international opportunities, which will be handled by the company’s sales and technical R&D departments. Applications include truck tarpaulins, fabrics for outdoor building products, specialty clothing, and marine covers, among others. Solano Community College Saves $48,000+ on Vallejo Center Paint Job with NeverFade® Paint from APV Engineered Coatings


APV Offers Industry-Exclusive 15-Year Paint-and-Labor Guarantee

VALLEJO, Calif. (September 27, 2016) — Faced with the prospect of having to repaint a relatively new, but severely faded building three times over a 15-year period, facility management at Solano Community College decided to try a different approach: take advantage of a 15-year paint-and-labor warranty on NeverFade® paint from APV Engineered Coatings. The result? Savings of more than $48,000.

Solano Community College’s Vallejo Center campus is located on the San Pablo Bay, northeast of San Francisco, an area known for ocean-driven fog, wind and moisture, coupled with sunny, hot and windy afternoons. The weather conditions caused the building’s exterior —originally painted with a premium acrylic latex paint — to fade from a bright, “Solano Safety Blue” to a tired, battleship grey in just five years. Even a light touch of the walls left a chalky residue on the hands.

“The building’s curb appeal was lackluster, to put it mildly, and we started to get complaints from students, community members and our board of trustees,” said James Buchanan, director of facilities for Solano Community College. “We didn’t relish the thought — or the expense — of having to repaint the building every five years.
