High-Performance, Water-Based Field-Applied Organic Finishes for Architectural Façade Restoration: Sustainability Never Looked So Good

Based on coating technology that has been an architectural industry standard for over five decades, water-based field-applied coatings made with Kynar Aquatec® resin are helping extend the lifetime of commercial buildings in an environmentally friendly way.

Replacing building façade materials can be a costly, time-consuming and disruptive endeavor. Fortunately, building owners and project specifiers now have a more efficient, cost-effective and sustainable way to extend the life of building exteriors with less disruption to tenants and activities than completely replacing façade materials. To realize how, it is important to understand the history behind the coating technology that has been trusted by the architectural community for decades.

In 1965, Arkema, Inc. introduced Kynar 500® based architectural finishes to the market, and over the next 30 years they became the coating of choice for architectural firms worldwide. However, they are solvent-based, with high VOC content. In addition, because Kynar 500® emulsion-based finishes must be baked at over 400oF, they can only be applied in a factory to metal coil and extrusion substrates. This limited their ability to be used on other OEM building products that could not withstand the temperature, like wood, vinyl and fiberglass. It also did not allow for field-applied use.

Kynar Aquatec® – The next generation of PVDF coatings

In 2001, Arkema addressed these initial limitations and began to develop a novel emulsion coatings technology that became Kynar Aquatec®.

The original goals of the program were to develop a resin that could be incorporated into a coating that could air-dry with long-term weathering performance similar to a Kynar 500® finish system but in a water-based formulation that required no baking and would film-form at ambient temperatures.

These objectives and ensuing technical development work led to the 2005 commercialization of the first Kynar Aquatec® grade called Kynar Aquatec® ARC. This tough, engineered thermoplastic resin that is inherently UV-resistant found its earliest uses in coatings used in metal restoration projects and OEM building products. In 2009, Arkema launched Kynar Aquatec® FMA12 for coatings used on cementitious and other substrates where breathability and/or greater elastic properties were needed. Arkema’s most recent offering in the Kynar Aquatec® line is called Kynar Aquatec® CRX. This resin was developed for applications requiring greater hardness, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance since it can be cross-linked with a second component.

Today, Kynar Aquatec® has become an innovative platform of emulsions used by paint formulators, like APV Engineered Coatings (Arkema’s first licensee), to make premium, low-VOC, weather-resistant, water-based coatings. Coatings formulated with these emulsions can provide the durability and performance of traditional factory-applied Kynar 500® based coatings. Coatings formulated with Kynar Aquatec® can be applied in the field to a variety of substrates, including metals, plastics, wood, concrete, stucco, EIFS and previously painted surfaces. Moreover, Kynar Aquatec® resin is manufactured through an innovative and patented process that uses no PFAS surfactants or any other fluorosurfactants in its ingredients or manufacturing process.

Figure 1: Nineteen years ago, a side-by-side comparison of Kynar Aquatec® to Kynar 500® finishes (using the same inorganic pigments) was conducted. No differences were found in color change, gloss or chalking for either system, demonstrating that that Kynar Aquatec® based systems can perform similarly to a Kynar 500® finish system.

Highly Resistant to Film Erosion

One of the primary purposes of an exterior architectural coating is to protect a building’s substrate from weathering. A key indicator of this protection is maintenance of the original film thickness. Figure 2 demonstrates a Kynar Aquatec®-based coating’s ability to resist film erosion after outdoor exposure compared with an acrylic-based coating. Both formulations shown utilize cobalt blue pigment, which is not affected by ultraviolet light and does not block UV from penetrating the coating surface. Therefore, any degradation of the coating from weathering is related to the resin binder system only. After seven years of exposure in South Florida at 45° angle facing south, the metal panel is completely showing through the 100% acrylic-based coating, which demonstrates erosion and nearly complete degradation of the coating. The Kynar Aquatec®-based coating is still intact with minimal color fade and no film erosion.

Quality Control through Licensing

To ensure that final coatings made with Kynar® resins meet Arkema’s quality and performance requirements, the company established a licensing program for its Kynar Aquatec® family of water-based PVDF resins. Manufacturer and specialty coatings formulator APV Engineered Coatings became an Arkema licensee in 2009 for its line of NeverFade® Façade Restoration Coatings, which has since been used on hundreds of architectural projects and structures worldwide.

NeverFade® is a line of water-based, low-VOC façade restoration coating systems that provide the durability of factory finish in a field-applied product. The harsh Sonoran Desert Climate in Cave Creek, Arizona was no match for NeverFade®, which looked like it was freshly applied nine years after its original application to the Plaza at Black Mountain. The Plaza’s brown stucco exterior had faded to light grey then washed out completely after years of weathering, leaving the stucco exposed to high temperatures and harsh UV rays. In 2010, it was coated with a custom-blended NeverFade® Original Topcoat in Sahara Yellow. In October 2012, one of the tenants moved out and took down their sign, leaving the bare stucco exposed. Thanks to the long-lasting performance of NeverFade®, the contractor was able to fill in the small area where the sign had been, and it was a perfect match to the rest of the elevation and building.

Another tenant had hung a banner on the east side of the exterior of his shop after the building was freshly coated in 2010. When the tenant retired in mid-2019, the banner was removed and behind it, the area protected from the sun was identical in color and appearance to the rest of the wall. You could not identify that the banner had ever been on the building — after nine years.

Application in a Coastal Environment Stands up to the Elements

 

AKRON, Ohio (April 25, 2018) — Some of the harshest outdoor environments in the country have been no match for the superior performance of NeverFade® Façade Restoration Coatings with Kynar Aquatec®. The low VOC, field-applied coating system from APV Engineered Coatings has passed the eight-year mark with no visible fading or chalking on an application in Sanibel Island, Florida, an area known for extreme humidity, high temperatures, corrosion from saltwater, and harsh UV conditions that cause even the most advanced coatings to fade and degrade.

NeverFade® coatings are a line of water-based, low-VOC topcoats that restore and protect building exteriors with long-lasting performance. The products are formulated with Kynar Aquatec®, a tough and industry-proven PVDF resin that resists thermal, chemical and ultraviolet degradation. First NeverFade® Application

Ronald D. Rooker of Ron’s Painting LLC in Fort Myers, Florida, was the first contractor to work with NeverFade® when the exterior coating system was launched in 2009. The system was used on a residential property with a stucco exterior in Sanibel Island, Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. The salt air, sea spray and humidity caused the original white paint to severely chalk and degrade, as well as grow mold and algae on the shaded, moisture-prone areas of the home (picture 1). APV had the color custom matched to the request of the homeowner and created a warm, soft yellow called NeverFade® Sanibel Sun. Rooker’s crew used an airless sprayer to apply the coating and then back-rolled it into the stucco profile.

“Being a high-performance coating, NeverFade® was very user-friendly,” said Rooker. “It was only one-component and had the ability to be spray, roll and brush applied when needed. It also kept a nice wet edge and showed no roller marks. It’s a great advantage to the property owner because it retains color and restricts mildew from growing, so the home won’t need to be pressure-cleaned nearly as often as it would if a high-end latex paint was used. Low maintenance was critical for the homeowners, as this is their vacation property.”

8 Years of Performance and Still Going Strong

Delta-E (ΔE) or Total Color Difference is a number that quantifies the distance between two colors. It is calculated based on delta L*, or lightness differences, da* redness or greenness differences, db*, blueness or yellowness differences between two items. When conducting a color analyses, a colorimeter is used to measure the delta L*, a*, b* values on an originally coated color panel (the standard) as well as on a variety of areas on the aged building exterior. An average ΔE is calculated from all of the samplings. As a rule of thumb, the higher the ΔE in comparison to the standard, the greater the difference in color.

A recent examination of the property in Sanibel Island after eight years in service found a ΔE of only 1 unit, well less than the parameters of the warranty, which covers ΔE of 5 or higher. There also were no signs of chalking or coating degradation (picture 2) and had been no mold or algae growth on any area of the property (pictures 3 and 4).

“Eight years without severe fading and chalking in South Florida is traditionally unheard of,” Couchie explained. “Even with high-performance urethanes and 100% acrylic-latex coatings, the pigment and binder have usually begun to degrade and fade leaving a significant shift in color and chalky residue on the surface. If left alone, paint will eventually deteriorate completely, leaving the building’s substrate bare and open to damage from the elements, which is a very costly problem to repair.”

“For us it was all about low maintenance,” said Mickey Ciriello, homeowner. “We used to have the property pressure-washed and repainted every three years, which can be very costly. The past eight years have saved us thousands of dollars and our home looks beautiful.”

A Coating for Every Surface

Special Session at University of Kynar® Offered Inside Look at Extended Service Life of NeverFade® Exterior Coatings In Extreme UV Environments

 

MIAMI (November 20, 2017) — APV Engineered Coatings’ Lon Bauer, senior coatings engineer, was a special guest speaker at last week’s University of Kynar® program, sponsored by Arkema Inc. and held at Atlas Material Testing Technology LLC.

Bauer presented to a group of 28 architects, engineers, specifiers and contractors, who were chosen to participate in the invitation-only class to learn about the key differences between NeverFade® Façade Restoration Coatings with Kynar Aquatec® (PVDF) and other high-performance coatings in the architectural industry. After the presentation, the guests walked through Atlas’ natural weathering testing site to see a variety of Kynar 500® and Kynar Aquatec® weathering studies that have spanned over 50 years of exposure in the extreme humidity, temperature, and UV conditions of southern Florida.

After 10-15 years of exposure, the panels with Kynar Aquatec® resin show very little color shift (delta E <5), and no signs of chalking from degradation of the PVDF resin. Other coatings in the study with the same pigments, formulated with acrylic, urethane, and even fluoroethylene vinyl ether (FEVE) resins, show much greater degrees of color fade, chalking, and resin degradation color fade in a bright red color, reaching as high as delta E >30 for FEVE and delta E >60 for acrylic urethane.

“It’s important for professionals who specify products for exterior restoration projects to understand a coating’s true service life from a chemical composition standpoint,” said Bauer. “Not all high-performance coatings are created equal and many are formulated with varying loading levels of key polymers that impact their ability to perform in subtropical outdoor environments over an extended length of time. Solano Community College Saves $48,000+ on Vallejo Center Paint Job with NeverFade® Paint from APV Engineered Coatings


APV Offers Industry-Exclusive 15-Year Paint-and-Labor Guarantee

VALLEJO, Calif. (September 27, 2016) — Faced with the prospect of having to repaint a relatively new, but severely faded building three times over a 15-year period, facility management at Solano Community College decided to try a different approach: take advantage of a 15-year paint-and-labor warranty on NeverFade® paint from APV Engineered Coatings. Solano Community College’s Vallejo Center campus is located on the San Pablo Bay, northeast of San Francisco, an area known for ocean-driven fog, wind and moisture, coupled with sunny, hot and windy afternoons. The weather conditions caused the building’s exterior —originally painted with a premium acrylic latex paint — to fade from a bright, “Solano Safety Blue” to a tired, battleship grey in just five years. “The building’s curb appeal was lackluster, to put it mildly, and we started to get complaints from students, community members and our board of trustees,” said James Buchanan, director of facilities for Solano Community College. “We didn’t relish the thought — or the expense — of having to repaint the building every five years. screenshot2_savingscalculatorMost importantly, the app functions as a Savings Calculator, which allows building owners, architects and industrial designers to calculate their potential energy savings with APV eCoolRoof versus a roof coated with a conventional elastomeric acrylic coating. To operate the calculator, users enter their state and size of roof in square feet. With that information, the user then receives the yearly cooling energy savings (in kWatts) over three years, the yearly cost savings over three years, the reduction in CO2 emissions over three years and the life cycle cost over 20 years.

Launched in January 2011, APV eCoolRoof is a cool roof coating system comprised of a Kynar Aquatec resin-based topcoat and an elastomeric acrylic basecoat. Working together, these two products can provide up to a 63 percent increase in life cycle energy savings for a structure, as well as up to a 63 percent reduction in CO2 emissions (versus using an elastomeric acrylic product). This ultimately lessens urban heat island effect and slows the rate of global warming! [i] The eco-friendly APV eCoolRoof has a low VOC content and resists ultraviolet (UV) ray degradation, chalking, water pickup, dirt pickup, staining, chemicals and corrosion, algae and fungal growth along with abrasion. Made in Ohio, the product increases the comfort level of the interior of a structure by providing lower indoor temperatures, which reduces the amount of energy used from cooling systems.

APV eCoolRoof is available nationwide directly from APV Engineered Coatings for use on commercial projects such as high rise buildings, refrigerated warehouses, domed facilities, factories and stadiums. The product’s reflectivity is warranted for 10 years. The product may be applied over a multitude of surfaces, such as PVC, asphalt, rubber (including EPDM), metal, SBS & APP modified bitumen, single-ply and polyurethane foam systems.

The APV eCoolRoof coating system meets or exceeds initial Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) requirements to reflect sunlight and heat away from a structure. The products are currently participating in a three-year certification program of age testing, after which they will qualify for ENERGY STAR® and CRRC ratings.

According to the CRRC, a benefit of a Cool Roof is the reduction in air pollution from the emissions of the roof itself, which can help reduce heat islands around cities and populous areas.
