APV Engineered Coatings Demonstrated Agility & Resiliency in 2020

AKRON, Ohio (1/25/2021) – APV Engineered Coatings started 2021 ready to build on the gains it experienced during one of the most challenging years in recent history. The company – an essential business that remained open and operating during the COVID-19 pandemic – pivoted to help meet public health needs while continuing to serve its customer base with specialty chemical products that contributed to the economy and kept other businesses moving forward.


“During years like this, many companies fail to realize the gains from intangible assets and instead, chase turnover ratios and revenue,” said David Venarge, Chairman, APV Engineered Coatings. “Throughout 2020, one of our largest achievements was exercising our character as a company. Although integrity, empathy, transparency, humility, and grit may be difficult to measure, they are equally powerful and essential to a growing business.”

disinfectants under private label for several customers.

Manufacturing Milestones

APV’s manufacturing headquarters in Akron became an EPA-Registered Facility in 2020, receiving its designation as EPA Establishment No.96197-oh-1. The registration certifies the company’s production of pesticides and active ingredients in a designated facility.

In March, as the COVID pandemic swept the world and demand for cleaning and sanitizing products skyrocketed, APV’s field service engineering team designed and built a new multi-head filling line inside a renovated 6,000 square foot area of the facility to be used for disinfectant production. The line, which is still in operation, has produced over 1 million gallons of surface disinfectants under private label for several customers that needed to quickly increase capacity to meet critical health and safety needs.

“We were honored to contribute to the emergent public health crisis by helping disinfectant manufacturers ramp up their production output,” said Mike Couchie, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, APV Engineered Coatings. “Our new, safe manufacturing and filling line was operational in record time to streamline throughput and sustain quality for our contract partners.”

APV’s private label and contract manufacturing, which grew 30 percent year-over-year in 2020, represents 31 percent of APV’s total revenues, an increase of 9 percent over 2019.

In other facility news, the company also completed the construction of an additional warehouse, which brings 20,000 square feet of warehouse space to its 14-acre campus. The warehouse was built to house materials and packaging necessary to support the increase in production volume.

 
Product Innovations

APV continued its focus on creating new custom chemical formulations for a range of unique applications in 2020. For example, the company:

  • Formulated innovative VYNGUARD® Durable Water Repellent (DWR) hydrophobic coatings for outdoor fabrics, clothing, and personal protective apparel.
  • Expanded VYNGUARD® Anti-Microbial coating chemistries with extreme resistance to disinfectants and cleaners for vinyl wallcovering, contract seating, and other applications.
  • Introduced a new UV-curable technology in the VYNGUARD® brand for marine and automotive fabric, such as covers, Bimini tops, as well as convertible and jeep soft tops.
  • Customized formulations under the KAPGUARD® line of high-performance PVDF-based coatings for building products made of polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, fiberglass reinforced plastic and other materials.
  • Created a highly unique anti-microbial coating for high-purity air filtration systems.

In addition to the successful launch of these new products, APV saw sales of existing products increase in 2020. The company’s NeverFade® brand enjoyed a 205 percent year-over-year sales growth, helping the company’s total portfolio of architectural building products achieve a 15 percent year-over-year sales growth. The architectural building products portfolio now represents 10 percent of APV’s total revenues, a growth of two percent over 2019.

Industry Leadership and Accolades

Inside APV’s newly constructed 20,000 square foot warehouse to support the increase in production volume.

APV demonstrated flexibility in 2020 as many industry events and conferences switched to online formats. For example, the company exhibited at the first virtual IFAI Expo in November.

APV, along with its supplier partner Arkema, Inc., also worked with the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) to develop a new specification that raises the bar for color retention. The SSPC Paint 47 standard was officially approved and issued at the end of December.

“This is the first standard for high-performance, field-applied coatings in darker and saturated colors,” said Couchie. “APV contributed to the effort by providing samples of NeverFade® for a blind study comparing different coating chemistries.”

APV, one of PCI Magazine’s Top 25 North American Paint Manufacturers, had its fair share of industry accolades in 2020 as well.

It received a PaintSquare Elevation Award in the Renovation/Retrofit category for a façade restoration project at the Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options facility in Sunrise, Fla. The project used NeverFade® Coatings with Kynar Aquatec® to give the 43,000-square-foot facility a fresh, welcoming new look and a 30-year extended service life.

APV also won the 2020 Metal Architecture Design Award in the Renovations and Retrofit category for a project that used NeverFade® Coatings to give a clean, factory-like finish to the anodized aluminum exterior of a 45-year-old, 18-story, Class-A office building in Newport Beach, California.

APV Announces VYNGUARD® Contest Winners from IFAI

AKRON, Ohio (October 28, 2016)- APV Engineered Coatings hosted a booth at the 2016 IFAI Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina last week to showcase their re-released VYNGUARD® product line.  VYNGUARD, a series of lacquer chemistries custom formulated for each customer, was originally launched for use with non-woven, vinyl substrates.  The company has now engineered additional formulations for use on specialty woven fabrics and leather hide applications.

“Flexible fabrics and vinyl manufacturing is one of our fastest growing markets and the VYNGUARD® brand is receiving excellent reviews from the industry. Our current customers have had such success in the field that we wanted to expand our presence into a broader arena… the IFAI show provided us the perfect setting to do that,” said Mike Couchie, Vice President of Sales.

APV acquired several domestic and international opportunities, which will be handled by the company’s sales and technical R&D departments. Applications include truck tarpaulins, fabrics for outdoor building products, specialty clothing, and marine covers, among others. APV’s engineers and technical experts have deep-rooted knowledge in the formulation of unique chemical technologies to optimize performance in the field or end-use.

Solano Community College Saves $48,000+ on Vallejo Center Paint Job with NeverFade® Paint from APV Engineered Coatings


APV Offers Industry-Exclusive 15-Year Paint-and-Labor Guarantee

VALLEJO, Calif. (September 27, 2016) — Faced with the prospect of having to repaint a relatively new, but severely faded building three times over a 15-year period, facility management at Solano Community College decided to try a different approach: take advantage of a 15-year paint-and-labor warranty on NeverFade® paint from APV Engineered Coatings. The result? Savings of more than $48,000.

Solano Community College’s Vallejo Center campus is located on the San Pablo Bay, northeast of San Francisco, an area known for ocean-driven fog, wind and moisture, coupled with sunny, hot and windy afternoons. The weather conditions caused the building’s exterior —originally painted with a premium acrylic latex paint — to fade from a bright, “Solano Safety Blue” to a tired, battleship grey in just five years. Even a light touch of the walls left a chalky residue on the hands.

“The building’s curb appeal was lackluster, to put it mildly, and we started to get complaints from students, community members and our board of trustees,” said James Buchanan, director of facilities for Solano Community College. “We didn’t relish the thought — or the expense — of having to repaint the building every five years. When we learned about the 15-year guarantee on NeverFade, it was an easy choice.”

NeverFade is a water-based, low-VOC exterior coating. It contains Kynar Aquatec® resin, a tough, engineering thermoplastic that does not degrade when exposed to harsh ultraviolet, thermal and chemical pollution environments. It resists fading, chalking, dirt, staining, algae, mold, and fungal growth and helps protect substrates from corrosion in marine environments.

For Solano Community College’s Vallejo Center, those costs were estimated to be $16,000-$18,000 per paint job — a significant expense if the building needed to be repainted every five years. Not included in that expense are the “soft costs” associated with the building’s appearance.

“We want to make our campus attractive to students and the community so it’s a good learning environment and a place people want to be,” Buchanan says. “Now, thanks to the NeverFade paint job, the Vallejo Center looks fabulous. Everyone is impressed with the striking color.”

Substantial Improvements Made to VYNGUARD® Polycarbonate Formulation

AKRON, Ohio (January 25, 2016) —VYNGUARD®, a line of premium, high-performance coatings and finishes for long-term performance, is now available for specialty fabric and leather hide applications. The line — originally launched for use with non-woven, vinyl substrates — includes seven base chemistries the company custom-formulates for each customer.

As part of the product re-launch, the company has made substantial improvements to its unique VYNGUARD® Polycarbonate formulation. Thanks to a custom-developed polymer, VYNGUARD® Polycarbonate now has improved abrasion resistance, improved surface tension for a softer and smoother finish, and additional UV inhibitors. It also provides exceptional dirt shedding and stain resistance for applications such as rolled decking, awning material and high-end wall coverings.

Available in solvent- or water-based, VYNGUARD® chemistries provide an easy-to-apply clear, protective layer that can mitigate 100 percent of plasticizer from migrating through the surface. They exceed industry standards for UV resistance, dirt shedding, moisture resistance, severe stain protection and fungal resistance, depending on the chemistry. Colored topcoats or print ink formulations are made with specialty grade inorganic pigments for superior color fastness. They have long coating lifecycles and provide high-definition print reception, superior dot gain properties and excellent adhesion.

Zyvex Molecularly Engineered Rubber Revolutionizes Commercial Applications

COLUMBUS, OHIO- In its continued focus to utilize carbon nanomaterials to revolutionize advanced materials, Zyvex Technologies announced today, at Nanotech 2012 in Tokyo, the introduction of its advanced rubber technology, Zyvex Molecularly Engineered Rubber or ZyMER.

Industry currently has a limited set of tools to enhance the mechanical or electrical properties of rubber compounds. Traditional additives, such as carbon black or silver, cannot provide improved mechanical or electrical properties without reducing the elastic properties that make rubber desirable. Using ZyMER, engineers, designers and manufacturers do not have to compromise when developing stronger or more conductive rubber formulations. Using three rubber compounds –SBR, NBR, and FKM (flouroelastomers) — results demonstrate (depending on the loading level of ZyMER):

  • Surface resistivity of 10(6) – 10(7) ohms/cm
  • Tear strength improvements of 30-40%
  • Tensile modulus (stiffness) improvements of 50-60%

The industry is evolving to help improve manufacturing outputs as products are upgraded. Long term, industrial engineers and designers can benefit from access to nanomaterials in the products they develop. Two-thirds of the world’s rubber is synthetic. Synthetic rubber’s increased adoption is from developments that make the production more efficient, less costly, and with less pollution to the environment.(1)

nanofusingCOLUMBUS AND AKRON, OH – The world’s first molecular nanotechnology company, Zyvex Technologies, and NanoFusing LLC; a subsidiary of APV Engineered Coatings, one of Ohio’s first paint and coatings manufacturers, have announced a partnership to provide nano-enhanced concentrates and products to the infrastructure markets and OEM industries.

Carbon based nanomaterials are widely recognized as the strongest materials known to man. Zyvex was the first company to deliver commercial products powered by carbon nanotubes (CNT) with sporting goods in 2004 and today with lightweight marine and automotive applications.

Leveraging the nanotechnology scientific resources of Zyvex and the manufacturing and nanotube dispersing expertise of NanoFusing LLC, the companies will produce custom carbon nanotube-enhanced concentrates to be implemented into materials for superior strength and performance, along with conductive, optical, and lightweight properties.

APV has been an innovator of high performance coating formulations and processing technologies since its founding in 1878. Known in the early 20th century for its Japanning Enamel, APV provided this black paint to the Ford Motor Company for the Model T. Since then, APV has formulated advanced custom coatings that service a variety of industries. Developments include an emphasis on architectural and industrial applications such as a reflective roof coating, engineered to provide 20 years of energy savings for a structure and water-based tire tread striping inks that contains zero VOCs to significantly reduce emissions in tire production plants. The official partnership between NanoFusing LLC and Zyvex leverages a history between the companies since Zyvex relocated to Ohio in 2008. The companies have already invested considerable engineering and processing development to manufacture the Zyvex carbon nanotube enhanced adhesive Epovex which is used in automotive applications.

Currently helping the Genoa Racing team stay longer on the winning track, Epovex “glues” the car back together for a permanent repair. Results are stronger than welding. The team started 2011 with a victory in the prestigious Mobil 1, 12 Hours of Sebring in March and also won at two other classic American tracks, Lime Rock Park and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Epovex Adhesive can be used on future carbon fiber car repairs, keeping costs and repair time to a minimum.

The first application for this partnership is expected to be with a large automotive supplier that produces various engine and drive train components for many commercial vehicle manufacturers. Nano-enhanced coatings are expected to be used to make tougher, more fuel efficient semi-trucks and reliable engines.

NanoFusingTM, NanoFusing LLC’s proprietary CNT dispersing process, homogenously disperses carbon nanotubes into liquid resins and materials (host matrix) safely. The unique Kentera technology from Zyvex creates chemical bonds on carbon nanotubes which allow them to connect to the host matrix creating a sustained and stable bond between the molecules and materials.

Case Study: Wells Fargo Florida Branch Roof Protected by APV eCoolRoof® to Conserve Energy

AKRON, OHIO- Pensacola, Florida, can get pretty hot in the summertime, with several days where the temperature clears 100 degrees. When this happens, the air conditioner in a building often runs continuously in an effort to keep inside temperatures down – and the effort isn’t always successful.

With this challenge in mind, an official with Wells Fargo® made the decision in January 2011 to redo the roof of the Northview Branch building in an effort to conserve energy and preserve the life of the roof. APV eCoolRoof® from APV Engineered Coatings®, a new cool roof coating system comprised of a Kynar Aquatec® resin-based topcoat and an elastomeric acrylic basecoat, was applied to the roof in April 2011. Working together, these two products can provide as much as 63 percent increase in life cycle energy savings for a structure.

Patrick Murrell, owner of Structure Cleaning and Coating and the nation’s first Pro-X Certified Contractor™ for APV eCoolRoof, was instrumental in the choice by Wells Fargo of the APV eCoolRoof coating system. A strong relationship with Wachovia led to the relationship with Wells Fargo as the company goes through the rebranding process of its bank branches. While this is Murrell’s first bank branch job using APV eCoolRoof, he suspects it won’t be his last.

“We expect the use of APV eCoolRoof to lower the utility bills of the branch quite a bit,” said Murrell. “Before application of the APV eCoolRoof coating system the roof temperature was around 140 degrees, while the underside of the roof inside the bank was 90 degrees – and this was when the outside air temperature was only 78 degrees. APV eCoolRoof is a quality product ideal for light commercial applications like this; we look forward to hearing about cooler days ahead inside the bank.”

Application of APV eCoolRoof is well-timed as Gulf Power Company launched their Commercial/Industrial EarthCents Programs on June 1, 2011. Offering commercial customer rebates, applicable upgrades include the installation of a reflective roof.

APV eCoolRoof was applied in mid-April, and folks at Wells Fargo plan to keep an eye on the project, noting before and after statistics, to determine whether to expand the product usage to additional bank branches. Initial statistics indicate that, since the application of the APV eCoolRoof product, the roof temperature of the building has been fluctuating between the same as the ambient air temperature to a maximum of three degrees above the ambient air temperature. This indicates a 60-62 degree decrease in roof temperature.

The installation process for the APV eCoolRoof coating system was quick: one day to clean and prep the roof of the building, one day to apply the basecoat and one day to apply the topcoat. Comprehensive APV eCoolRoof System

The single coat applications of both the basecoat and topcoat for APV eCoolRoof are field-applied and air dried, requiring no baking. Additional benefits include the white color retention of the glossy coating over years of service, reduction in maintenance costs and the ability to extend the life of a current roof.
