High-Performance, Water-Based Field-Applied Organic Finishes for Architectural Façade Restoration: Sustainability Never Looked So Good

Based on coating technology that has been an architectural industry standard for over five decades, water-based field-applied coatings made with Kynar Aquatec® resin are helping extend the lifetime of commercial buildings in an environmentally friendly way.

Replacing building façade materials can be a costly, time-consuming and disruptive endeavor. Fortunately, building owners and project specifiers now have a more efficient, cost-effective and sustainable way to extend the life of building exteriors with less disruption to tenants and activities than completely replacing façade materials. To realize how, it is important to understand the history behind the coating technology that has been trusted by the architectural community for decades.

In 1965, Arkema, Inc. introduced Kynar 500® based architectural finishes to the market, and over the next 30 years they became the coating of choice for architectural firms worldwide. However, they are solvent-based, with high VOC content. In addition, because Kynar 500® emulsion-based finishes must be baked at over 400oF, they can only be applied in a factory to metal coil and extrusion substrates. This limited their ability to be used on other OEM building products that could not withstand the temperature, like wood, vinyl and fiberglass. It also did not allow for field-applied use.

Kynar Aquatec® – The next generation of PVDF coatings

In 2001, Arkema addressed these initial limitations and began to develop a novel emulsion coatings technology that became Kynar Aquatec®.

The original goals of the program were to develop a resin that could be incorporated into a coating that could air-dry with long-term weathering performance similar to a Kynar 500® finish system but in a water-based formulation that required no baking and would film-form at ambient temperatures.

These objectives and ensuing technical development work led to the 2005 commercialization of the first Kynar Aquatec® grade called Kynar Aquatec® ARC. This tough, engineered thermoplastic resin that is inherently UV-resistant found its earliest uses in coatings used in metal restoration projects and OEM building products. In 2009, Arkema launched Kynar Aquatec® FMA12 for coatings used on cementitious and other substrates where breathability and/or greater elastic properties were needed. Arkema’s most recent offering in the Kynar Aquatec® line is called Kynar Aquatec® CRX. This resin was developed for applications requiring greater hardness, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance since it can be cross-linked with a second component.

Today, Kynar Aquatec® has become an innovative platform of emulsions used by paint formulators, like APV Engineered Coatings (Arkema’s first licensee), to make premium, low-VOC, weather-resistant, water-based coatings. Coatings formulated with these emulsions can provide the durability and performance of traditional factory-applied Kynar 500® based coatings. Coatings formulated with Kynar Aquatec® can be applied in the field to a variety of substrates, including metals, plastics, wood, concrete, stucco, EIFS and previously painted surfaces. Moreover, Kynar Aquatec® resin is manufactured through an innovative and patented process that uses no PFAS surfactants or any other fluorosurfactants in its ingredients or manufacturing process.

Figure 1: Nineteen years ago, a side-by-side comparison of Kynar Aquatec® to Kynar 500® finishes (using the same inorganic pigments) was conducted. No differences were found in color change, gloss or chalking for either system, demonstrating that that Kynar Aquatec® based systems can perform similarly to a Kynar 500® finish system.

Highly Resistant to Film Erosion

One of the primary purposes of an exterior architectural coating is to protect a building’s substrate from weathering. A key indicator of this protection is maintenance of the original film thickness. Figure 2 demonstrates a Kynar Aquatec®-based coating’s ability to resist film erosion after outdoor exposure compared with an acrylic-based coating. Both formulations shown utilize cobalt blue pigment, which is not affected by ultraviolet light and does not block UV from penetrating the coating surface. Therefore, any degradation of the coating from weathering is related to the resin binder system only. After seven years of exposure in South Florida at 45° angle facing south, the metal panel is completely showing through the 100% acrylic-based coating, which demonstrates erosion and nearly complete degradation of the coating. The Kynar Aquatec®-based coating is still intact with minimal color fade and no film erosion.

Quality Control through Licensing

To ensure that final coatings made with Kynar® resins meet Arkema’s quality and performance requirements, the company established a licensing program for its Kynar Aquatec® family of water-based PVDF resins. Manufacturer and specialty coatings formulator APV Engineered Coatings became an Arkema licensee in 2009 for its line of NeverFade® Façade Restoration Coatings, which has since been used on hundreds of architectural projects and structures worldwide.

NeverFade® Façade Restoration Coatings Save Time and Money

NeverFade® is a line of water-based, low-VOC façade restoration coating systems that provide the durability of factory finish in a field-applied product. Its quality ingredients and unique ingenuity provide a 30-year life cycle, unlike any other coating on the market. The harsh Sonoran Desert Climate in Cave Creek, Arizona was no match for NeverFade®, which looked like it was freshly applied nine years after its original application to the Plaza at Black Mountain. The Plaza’s brown stucco exterior had faded to light grey then washed out completely after years of weathering, leaving the stucco exposed to high temperatures and harsh UV rays. In 2010, it was coated with a custom-blended NeverFade® Original Topcoat in Sahara Yellow. In October 2012, one of the tenants moved out and took down their sign, leaving the bare stucco exposed. Thanks to the long-lasting performance of NeverFade®, the contractor was able to fill in the small area where the sign had been, and it was a perfect match to the rest of the elevation and building.

Another tenant had hung a banner on the east side of the exterior of his shop after the building was freshly coated in 2010. When the tenant retired in mid-2019, the banner was removed and behind it, the area protected from the sun was identical in color and appearance to the rest of the wall. You could not identify that the banner had ever been on the building — after nine years.

New Formula for Architectural Metal Applications

Earlier this year, APV launched a new NeverFade® topcoat to completely restore metal facades so that they look and perform just as though they have a new factory finish. The new topcoat is called NeverFade® Metal Restoration Topcoat and it supplements the industry-proven NeverFade® Original Topcoat which is for concrete, stucco, masonry, fiber cement, composite materials and vinyl building exteriors. Like the original, it is water-based and meets SCAQMD Rule 1113 VOC limits in Southern California for industrial maintenance coatings, with less than 100 grams/liter of VOCs. NeverFade® Metal Restoration Topcoat can be used with APV’s complementary W-1650 Bonding Primer for previously coated surfaces, such as Kynar 500® or silicon polyester finishes, as well as APV’s W-1500 Universal Primer for a variety of substrates. The primers contain less than 50 grams/liter of VOCs, meeting SCAQMC Rule 1113 VOC limits for Southern California. The water-based topcoat also can be used with APV’s two-component corrosion resistant epoxy primer for extreme, corrosive weather environments. APV Engineered Coatings Introduces NeverFade® Façade Restoration For Architectural Metal Applications

 

AKRON, Ohio (4/19/2017) — APV Engineered Coatings has launched a new line of primer and topcoat systems under the NeverFade® brand name for restoration of architectural metal structures such as wall panels, window and door frames, roofs, railings, overhangs and decorative features. Available in water based formulations with Kynar Aquatec® and solvent based formulations with Kynar® PVDF, the new NeverFade® Façade Restoration coatings are ideal for use with carbon steel, stainless steel, bare aluminum and anodized aluminum.

These robust coating systems resist UV degradation, abrasion, corrosion, mold growth, dirt and staining. They resist chalking and maintain their color (even with dark colors and earth tones) so well that APV offers a 15-year warranty for fade performance. The warranty covers replacement product as well as labor costs.

“Our NeverFade® original formulation was initially launched for concrete, stucco, masonry and vinyl siding applications,” said Mike Couchie, vice president, sales, APV Coatings. “Now, we’re offering a restoration system that will help commercial and industrial property owners completely restore metal facades so they look and perform just as though they had a new factory finish. Although we warrant the product to perform against fading for 15 years, it should perform against the elements for up to 30 years.”

Water- and Solvent-Based Formulations

The product line’s water-based metal restoration coatings are formulated with Kynar Aquatec® emulsion from Arkema. It meets SCAQMD Rule 1113 VOC limits in Southern California for industrial maintenance coatings, with only 40-100 grams/liter of VOCs, depending on color. The coating can be used with APV’s complementary W-1650 bonding primer for previously coated fluoropolymer surfaces, such as Kynar 500® resin-based coatings, which demonstrates excellent adhesion. The primer contains 50 grams/liter of VOCs, meeting SCAQMC Rule 1113 VOC limits for Southern California of 100 grams/liter of VOCs. The water-based topcoat also can be used with APV’s W-1500 universal primer and APV’s two component corrosion-resistant epoxy primer. This product contains exempt solvents to meet SCAQMC Rule 1113 VOC limits.

The solvent-based metal restoration coatings are formulated with Kynar ADS® II resin from Arkema. It dries in 10-15 minutes and sets up and hardens quickly. The coating can be used with APV’s complementary two component corrosion-resistant epoxy primer, a robust primer that provides an exceptional bond to metal and concrete surfaces.

“Kynar® PVDF resin-based coatings have over 50 years of demonstrated weathering and UV resistance in both wet and dry climates. Solano Community College Saves $48,000+ on Vallejo Center Paint Job with NeverFade® Paint from APV Engineered Coatings


APV Offers Industry-Exclusive 15-Year Paint-and-Labor Guarantee

VALLEJO, Calif. (September 27, 2016) — Faced with the prospect of having to repaint a relatively new, but severely faded building three times over a 15-year period, facility management at Solano Community College decided to try a different approach: take advantage of a 15-year paint-and-labor warranty on NeverFade® paint from APV Engineered Coatings. It contains Kynar Aquatec® resin, a tough, engineering thermoplastic that does not degrade when exposed to harsh ultraviolet, thermal and chemical pollution environments. It resists fading, chalking, dirt, staining, algae, mold, and fungal growth and helps protect substrates from corrosion in marine environments.

For Solano Community College’s Vallejo Center, those costs were estimated to be $16,000-$18,000 per paint job — a significant expense if the building needed to be repainted every five years. Not included in that expense are the “soft costs” associated with the building’s appearance.

Engineering the Perfect Tire Stripe

APV Equipment Engineering TeamAKRON, Ohio (August 15, 2016) — From unique rubber compounds to varying tread patterns, tire producers focus on a number of areas on the tire to set themselves apart and perfect the look of the finished tire. Although not a primary focus of tire designers, the brightly colored identification marks around the tread play a key role in tire building as well as the aesthetics of the finished product. APV Engineered Coatings has been developing and commercializing vibrant, long-lasting stripes for decades by optimizing the ink formulation and application equipment for tire makers and can attest to the importance of engineering the perfect tread stripe.

The Formulation
Tire makers have found that some consumers will correlate a fresh new tire with the vibrancy and completeness of the tread stripe. Regardless of whether a tire has passed inspection; it can provoke the inclination that it lacks quality if the stripe appears faded, has been removed, or contains any imperfections. APV addresses this consumer concern and meets the tire companies practical requirements for tread striping with an industry-proven line of inks, which remain vibrant for an extended period of time, adhere to the rubber compound, cure under a variety of drying conditions, and meet EPA restrictions on solvents and VOCs. The ink chemistry is a unique formulation that is offered in two water-based versions, based on viscosity. Depending on the application equipment being used to apply the stripe, APV determines the appropriate ink system for the tire maker.

The Application
Chemistry is not the only component of a perfect tire stripe; the application equipment is also critical to stripe aesthetics and life-cycle. This is the reasoning behind the APV’s newly formed team of engineers who design and install customized equipment for individual tire facilities. This engineering team has not only proven to be a unique selling advantage for APV, but also its foundation for successfully striping millions of tires per day throughout the world.

“Not all tire makers apply stripes in the same manner, so we’ve designed different systems to accommodate variables, such as: the volume of tires produced, the number of stripes and colors applied to each tire, just to name a couple,” says Matthew Logan, Engineering Manager at APV. “We can’t successfully apply [tread] stripes without customizing the equipment for each customer.”

APV offers three base striping systems: the Beugler® Wheel system, the Gravity Feed System, and the Pressurized Capillary System. Each system is custom-designed to meet the needs of the individual production facility, whether engineering for the degree of automation required or number of stripes/colors applied.

With the Beugler® Wheel System, a quart-sized bottle of tread striping ink is outfitted with a special cap paired with a pitched or toothed wheel. The bottle is placed upside down in a custom holder, placing the wheel against the tread. As the tread moves on the conveyer belt, the wheel rotates, transferring the ink evenly onto the tread. The Beugler® caps and wheels are designed in a variety of sizes and pitches to allow different striping widths and transfer amounts.

APV’s Gravity Feed Striping System consists of a multi-bottle unit, specialized gravity feed caps, tubing, and a control panel. The ink cap is fitted to the tubing, which is attached to a specific gauge syringe needle. The needle is secured into place on the tread compound by a uniquely designed holder. Gravity supplies the ink to the needle, and a pre-designated amount is applied to the surface, allowing a regulated flow rate. As the tread moves on the conveyor, the ink is applied. The control panel is semi-automatic and easy to operate.

The Pressurized Capillary System is ideal for production lines that produce a large volume of tire stripes per day. The system consists of ASME pressure tanks, a custom engineered air pressure manifold, a specialized ink pressure manifold, and a control panel. Striping ink is stored and agitated in the tanks and an air pressure manifold sends the ink through the capillary tubing to the ink manifold. The ink is then fed to the needle and transferred to the tread in a similar manner as the Gravity Feed System. Each color in the system is independently controlled by an extra sensitive regulator to increase or decrease pressure, which determines the flow rate of the ink.

The Future in Tread Striping
APV is continuing its strategic focus on optimizing the striping ink formulation with its customized equipment to achieve the perfect stripe. The equipment engineering team continues to improve tread striping areas of production, resulting in reduced scrap for tire companies, a lower VOC emitting process, and improved tire aesthetics.

APV Engineered Coatings Renovates & Expands Laboratory Facilities

AKRON, OHIO- To support its philosophy of extensive client involvement, APV Engineered Coatings, a custom coatings manufacturer, has tripled the size of its Akron laboratory. The expansion provides a better atmosphere for lab trials with APV’s clients and accommodates the manufacturer’s growing staff of chemists.

“We encourage our clients to be as involved as much as they’d like in the development and testing process,” said Thomas Venarge, President of APV Engineered Coatings. “Often this means coming inside the lab to work alongside a chemist, and we want them to feel as welcome as possible. The improvements to our facility are also focused on making sure our top-of-their-field chemists feel comfortable there, too.”

Venarge noted the expansion will support future growth. APV Engineered Coatings has increased staff nearly 30 percent since 2010.

Now boasting nearly 7,000 sq ft. of work and storage space, the updated laboratory includes a range of upgrades, many designed to improved interaction between APV’s chemists and clients, as well as between clients and their custom-designed projects. These upgrades include:

  • New visitor work station equipped with computer terminal accessibility
  • Improved dispersion lab equipped with a wide-range of milling and dispersion prototyping machinery
  • Expanded spray booth with viewing window to accommodate larger sample projects

“Our upgraded spray booth allows our staff to properly test coatings on our client’s existing products,” said Venarge. “Not only does this give clients a visual of our recommendations, it also allows us to test the coating’s viscosity – a critically important step in the process.”

Additional upgrades to the lab are designed to maintain the health, safety and comfort of chemists, staff and clients. These improvements include:

  • Additional mixing, testing and spraying space to allow chemists more room to mix product samples

Industry currently has a limited set of tools to enhance the mechanical or electrical properties of rubber compounds. Traditional additives, such as carbon black or silver, cannot provide improved mechanical or electrical properties without reducing the elastic properties that make rubber desirable. Using ZyMER, engineers, designers and manufacturers do not have to compromise when developing stronger or more conductive rubber formulations. Using three rubber compounds –SBR, NBR, and FKM (flouroelastomers) — results demonstrate (depending on the loading level of ZyMER):

  • Surface resistivity of 10(6) – 10(7) ohms/cm
  • Tear strength improvements of 30-40%
  • Tensile modulus (stiffness) improvements of 50-60%

The industry is evolving to help improve manufacturing outputs as products are upgraded. Long term, industrial engineers and designers can benefit from access to nanomaterials in the products they develop. Two-thirds of the world’s rubber is synthetic. Synthetic rubber’s increased adoption is from developments that make the production more efficient, less costly, and with less pollution to the environment.(1)

Case Study: Wells Fargo Florida Branch Roof Protected by APV eCoolRoof® to Conserve Energy

AKRON, OHIO- Pensacola, Florida, can get pretty hot in the summertime, with several days where the temperature clears 100 degrees. When this happens, the air conditioner in a building often runs continuously in an effort to keep inside temperatures down – and the effort isn’t always successful.

With this challenge in mind, an official with Wells Fargo® made the decision in January 2011 to redo the roof of the Northview Branch building in an effort to conserve energy and preserve the life of the roof. APV eCoolRoof® from APV Engineered Coatings®, a new cool roof coating system comprised of a Kynar Aquatec® resin-based topcoat and an elastomeric acrylic basecoat, was applied to the roof in April 2011. Working together, these two products can provide as much as 63 percent increase in life cycle energy savings for a structure.

Patrick Murrell, owner of Structure Cleaning and Coating and the nation’s first Pro-X Certified Contractor™ for APV eCoolRoof, was instrumental in the choice by Wells Fargo of the APV eCoolRoof coating system. A strong relationship with Wachovia led to the relationship with Wells Fargo as the company goes through the rebranding process of its bank branches. While this is Murrell’s first bank branch job using APV eCoolRoof, he suspects it won’t be his last.

“We expect the use of APV eCoolRoof to lower the utility bills of the branch quite a bit,” said Murrell. “Before application of the APV eCoolRoof coating system the roof temperature was around 140 degrees, while the underside of the roof inside the bank was 90 degrees – and this was when the outside air temperature was only 78 degrees. APV eCoolRoof is a quality product ideal for light commercial applications like this; we look forward to hearing about cooler days ahead inside the bank.”

Application of APV eCoolRoof is well-timed as Gulf Power Company launched their Commercial/Industrial EarthCents Programs on June 1, 2011. Offering commercial customer rebates, applicable upgrades include the installation of a reflective roof.

APV eCoolRoof was applied in mid-April, and folks at Wells Fargo plan to keep an eye on the project, noting before and after statistics, to determine whether to expand the product usage to additional bank branches. Initial statistics indicate that, since the application of the APV eCoolRoof product, the roof temperature of the building has been fluctuating between the same as the ambient air temperature to a maximum of three degrees above the ambient air temperature. This indicates a 60-62 degree decrease in roof temperature.

The installation process for the APV eCoolRoof coating system was quick: one day to clean and prep the roof of the building, one day to apply the basecoat and one day to apply the topcoat.
