High-Performance Exterior Coatings Protect Biotech Office Center From 20+ Years of Future Weathering Damage

Sleepy Hollow, New York (12/22/2020) – Home to several high-profile tenants since its construction in the early 1970s, the 1 Rockwood office building now occupied by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc., recently underwent a complete restoration of its façade using NeverFade® Exterior Restoration Coatings with Kynar Aquatec® from APV Engineered Coatings. The restoration project will help the building resist exterior fading and degradation for at least 20 years.

Preparing the Surface

Stuart Dean Company, a national Certified Applicator of NeverFade® Coating Systems, conducted the five-month restoration of 40,000 square feet of exterior aluminum panels. According to Chris Incorvaia, National Manager of Façade Restoration, Stuart Dean Company, the 20-technician crew started by preparing the surface for coating application.

“The aluminum panels had been previously field-painted with an acrylic polyurethane,” he said. “That previous coating had degraded significantly due to UV exposure and weathering.”

NeverFade® Coatings were an ideal choice for the project, he said, because they can be used on previously painted surfaces. The coatings contain Kynar Aquatec®, a water-based PVDF resin that does not need to be baked, making it ideal for air-dry, field-applied coatings.

“NeverFade® is a premium, weather-resistant coating that can be easily applied to a variety of substrates,” Incorvaia added, noting that the coating system meets the same requirements of factory coatings using American Architectural Manufacturers Association, Publication No. AAMA 2605-13.

Proper surface conditions are crucial to achieving good coating adhesion and long life, so the Stuart Dean team was careful to fully prepare the surface. They started by removing sealants from all joints: metal to metal, metal to glass, and along window perimeters. These sealants were replaced 72 hours after the final topcoat. Next, they washed all surfaces to remove environmental contaminants such as chlorides and nitrates. Finally, they prepared the surface for the new coating by scuffing and sanding it to achieve a 1.0-1.5-mil anchor profile in accordance with NACE surface preparation guidelines.

Smooth Application

Before applying the coating system, the Stuart Dean crew masked windows and adjacent surfaces to protect them. Then, they began the coating application, starting with one coat and 1.00-1.25 mils DFT of APV’s W-1650 Bonding Primer, which was roll-applied.

W-1650 Bonding Primer is a unique chemistry designed to adhere directly to metal and to tough coated surfaces, such as Kynar 500®, siliconized polyester, and powder coatings.

“The advanced, water-based and low-VOC chemistry provides early water resistance, protects against corrosion and applies with a smooth, uniform finish, delivering optimum aesthetics to the coating system,” said Erin Neff, Director of Marketing and Business Development, APV Engineered Coatings.

The primer was followed by 2 coats and 2.00 mils DFT of the NeverFade® Metal Restoration Topcoat, also applied by roller. NeverFade® provides a superior factory-like finish in a field-applied coating. Its advanced formulation is engineered for extreme UV protection, as well as resistance to algae, fungal growth, abrasion, dirt pickup and stains. APV offered a 15-year, transferrable product-and-labor warranty to the building owner. The warranty covers color fading and chalking, guaranteeing that NeverFade® will dramatically outperform other field-applied, high-performance coatings, even in extreme environments.

As it does with all NeverFade® projects, APV custom matched the topcoat in a color selected by the building owner – in this case colonial white.

“A high-performance coating is critical for white exterior surfaces, especially in damp environments like this building,” Neff explained. “When traditional latexes and urethanes break down under harsh UV rays, the paint film degrades, turning chalky, and eventually erodes away. That chalkiness is not always noticeable up against the white surface, but paint is losing its protective qualities. A chalked surface also becomes a food source for mold and mildew growth and makes conditions ripe for dirt collection.”

Throughout the entire coating process, the Stuart Dean crew paid special attention to ambient environmental conditions.

“The building is located on wetlands and is subjected to a high concentration of moisture and precipitation,” Incorvaia said. “To maintain quality control and ensure the long-term performance of the coating system, we diligently measured air temperature, surface temperature, relative humidity and dew point. Coatings were only applied when those conditions fell within APV’s approved parameters.”

The coating crew also operated under strict safety protocols, which were detailed after conducting a job hazard analysis and developing a site-specific safety plan. Crew members were certified in the use of the stationary scaffold and boom lifts from which they accessed the panels. They wore full body harnesses with lanyards fastened to anchor points.

“We had a supervisor onsite during the entire project to ensure all processes and procedures were being followed,” Incorvaia said. “We also inspected all access equipment and personal fall protection gear before each use. Plus, we installed barriers around the work area for pedestrian flow control and safety.”

“Along with quality, Stuart Dean’s attention to safety is one of the reasons we have designated them as a NeverFade® National Certified Applicator,” Neff said. “Only approved or certified status applicators can purchase and install NeverFade® to comply with our warranty program.”

Extended Building Life with Minimal Disruption

The exterior restoration was completed within five months, and the building remained fully occupied during the entire project. Tenant disruption and risk were kept to a minimum, thanks to Stuart Dean’s strict safety protocols and the low-odor, low-VOC NeverFade® coating system.

The protective coating system extended the service life of the aluminum panel system by 20+ years and prevented the panels from having to be replaced, a time-consuming process whose cost was estimated at four to five times the cost of the restoration conducted.

High-Performance, Water-Based Field-Applied Organic Finishes for Architectural Façade Restoration: Sustainability Never Looked So Good

Based on coating technology that has been an architectural industry standard for over five decades, water-based field-applied coatings made with Kynar Aquatec® resin are helping extend the lifetime of commercial buildings in an environmentally friendly way.

Replacing building façade materials can be a costly, time-consuming and disruptive endeavor. Fortunately, building owners and project specifiers now have a more efficient, cost-effective and sustainable way to extend the life of building exteriors with less disruption to tenants and activities than completely replacing façade materials. To realize how, it is important to understand the history behind the coating technology that has been trusted by the architectural community for decades.

In 1965, Arkema, Inc. introduced Kynar 500® based architectural finishes to the market, and over the next 30 years they became the coating of choice for architectural firms worldwide. However, they are solvent-based, with high VOC content. In addition, because Kynar 500® emulsion-based finishes must be baked at over 400oF, they can only be applied in a factory to metal coil and extrusion substrates. This limited their ability to be used on other OEM building products that could not withstand the temperature, like wood, vinyl and fiberglass. It also did not allow for field-applied use.

Kynar Aquatec® – The next generation of PVDF coatings

In 2001, Arkema addressed these initial limitations and began to develop a novel emulsion coatings technology that became Kynar Aquatec®.

The original goals of the program were to develop a resin that could be incorporated into a coating that could air-dry with long-term weathering performance similar to a Kynar 500® finish system but in a water-based formulation that required no baking and would film-form at ambient temperatures.

These objectives and ensuing technical development work led to the 2005 commercialization of the first Kynar Aquatec® grade called Kynar Aquatec® ARC. This tough, engineered thermoplastic resin that is inherently UV-resistant found its earliest uses in coatings used in metal restoration projects and OEM building products. In 2009, Arkema launched Kynar Aquatec® FMA12 for coatings used on cementitious and other substrates where breathability and/or greater elastic properties were needed. Arkema’s most recent offering in the Kynar Aquatec® line is called Kynar Aquatec® CRX. This resin was developed for applications requiring greater hardness, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance since it can be cross-linked with a second component.

Today, Kynar Aquatec® has become an innovative platform of emulsions used by paint formulators, like APV Engineered Coatings (Arkema’s first licensee), to make premium, low-VOC, weather-resistant, water-based coatings. Coatings formulated with these emulsions can provide the durability and performance of traditional factory-applied Kynar 500® based coatings. Coatings formulated with Kynar Aquatec® can be applied in the field to a variety of substrates, including metals, plastics, wood, concrete, stucco, EIFS and previously painted surfaces. Moreover, Kynar Aquatec® resin is manufactured through an innovative and patented process that uses no PFAS surfactants or any other fluorosurfactants in its ingredients or manufacturing process.

Figure 1: Nineteen years ago, a side-by-side comparison of Kynar Aquatec® to Kynar 500® finishes (using the same inorganic pigments) was conducted. No differences were found in color change, gloss or chalking for either system, demonstrating that that Kynar Aquatec® based systems can perform similarly to a Kynar 500® finish system.

Highly Resistant to Film Erosion

One of the primary purposes of an exterior architectural coating is to protect a building’s substrate from weathering. A key indicator of this protection is maintenance of the original film thickness. Figure 2 demonstrates a Kynar Aquatec®-based coating’s ability to resist film erosion after outdoor exposure compared with an acrylic-based coating. Both formulations shown utilize cobalt blue pigment, which is not affected by ultraviolet light and does not block UV from penetrating the coating surface. Therefore, any degradation of the coating from weathering is related to the resin binder system only. After seven years of exposure in South Florida at 45° angle facing south, the metal panel is completely showing through the 100% acrylic-based coating, which demonstrates erosion and nearly complete degradation of the coating. The Kynar Aquatec®-based coating is still intact with minimal color fade and no film erosion.

Quality Control through Licensing

To ensure that final coatings made with Kynar® resins meet Arkema’s quality and performance requirements, the company established a licensing program for its Kynar Aquatec® family of water-based PVDF resins. Manufacturer and specialty coatings formulator APV Engineered Coatings became an Arkema licensee in 2009 for its line of NeverFade® Façade Restoration Coatings, which has since been used on hundreds of architectural projects and structures worldwide.

The harsh Sonoran Desert Climate in Cave Creek, Arizona was no match for NeverFade®, which looked like it was freshly applied nine years after its original application to the Plaza at Black Mountain. The Plaza’s brown stucco exterior had faded to light grey then washed out completely after years of weathering, leaving the stucco exposed to high temperatures and harsh UV rays. In 2010, it was coated with a custom-blended NeverFade® Original Topcoat in Sahara Yellow. In October 2012, one of the tenants moved out and took down their sign, leaving the bare stucco exposed. Thanks to the long-lasting performance of NeverFade®, the contractor was able to fill in the small area where the sign had been, and it was a perfect match to the rest of the elevation and building.

Another tenant had hung a banner on the east side of the exterior of his shop after the building was freshly coated in 2010. When the tenant retired in mid-2019, the banner was removed and behind it, the area protected from the sun was identical in color and appearance to the rest of the wall. You could not identify that the banner had ever been on the building — after nine years.

APV Announces VYNGUARD® Contest Winners from IFAI

AKRON, Ohio (October 28, 2016)- APV Engineered Coatings hosted a booth at the 2016 IFAI Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina last week to showcase their re-released VYNGUARD® product line.  VYNGUARD, a series of lacquer chemistries custom formulated for each customer, was originally launched for use with non-woven, vinyl substrates.  The company has now engineered additional formulations for use on specialty woven fabrics and leather hide applications.

Lon Bauer Joins APV Engineered Coatings as Product Development Manager

Bauer’s background includes 25+ years in the chemical industry and 20+ years in the coatings industry. Over his career, he has developed chemistries for adhesives, graphic arts, functional coatings, paper coatings, inks, paints and flexible film coatings. Prior to joining APV, Bauer was responsible for developing a formaldehyde-free upholstery coating and a water-based lid coating. He received two patents for his development of a heat seal re-seal coating.

APV Engineered Coatings’ Great Success at IFAI Specialty Fabric Expo 2013

Announces Prospects for Vynguard® Customizable Coatings and Sweepstake Winners

AKRON, OHIO- APV Engineered Coatings, a 135 year old manufacturer and marketer of coatings and chemical products recently held a booth at the 2013 IFAI Specialty Fabric Expo in Orlando, Florida to showcase the company’s new customizable, high performance fluoropolymer coating, Vyngaurd® Weldable PVDF. The company had debuted the product earlier this year.

“Since launching Vyngaurd® Weldable PVDF we’ve received an excellent response from the marketplace and the IFAI Expo was a perfect opportunity for APV to increase brand awareness and acquire greater interest within the industry,” said Michael Couchie, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for APV.

“There was a great bit of excitement during the preparation leading up to the show and we were not disappointed,” said Erin Brown, Marketing Director for APV. Vynguard® Weldable PVDF Coating Extends Lifecycle of Flexible Vinyl; Product Available As Solvent or Eco-Friendly Water Base Compound

AKRON, OHIO- August 21, 2013- APV Engineered Coatings, a manufacturer and marketer of coatings and chemical products for over 135 years, has launched a new product, Vynguard® Weldable PVDF. A customizable, high-performance fluoropolymer coating, Vynguard® Weldable PVDF is specifically engineered to protect flexible vinyl films used in outdoor applications.

Using a fluoropolymer chemistry originally developed for metal roofing, and for a cost of less than $.10 per square foot of vinyl, Vynguard® Weldable PVDF for flexible vinyl materials is able to:

  • block 100% of plasticizer migration
  • be customized to suit each customer’s performance criteria
  • provide protection against the elements for well over ten years
  • sustain the coated product’s aesthetics.

As a result, products coated with Vynguard® Weldable PVDF have a longer useful life, lower cost of ownership and maintain their visual appeal throughout their use. In addition, Vynguard® Weldable PVDF is the only coating of its type offered in both solvent-based and water-based formulations. Using the eco-friendly water-based formulation can substantially lower a company’s environmental remediation costs.

The unique chemistry of Vynguard® Weldable PVDF allows the customer and APV to collaborate on the product’s formulation to produce a coating tailored to the customer’s specific needs, helping to create differentiation and a unique selling advantage.

APV Engineered Coatings Hires Industry Veteran Lars Larsen to be its International Sales Director

Larsen Brings to APV a Lifetime of Chemicals Industry Experience, Including More Than 30 Years Spent in International Sales
AKRON, OHIO- APV Engineered Coatings, a 135-year-old manufacturer and marketer of coatings and chemical products, has hired Lars Larsen as its new International Sales Director. Larsen most recently worked as an industry consultant and advisor in his role as President and Owner of Know Polymers Inc. Prior to his consulting work Mr. Larsen spent 31 years with Struktol Company of America, a leading manufacturer of process additives for the plastics and rubber industries. He has been involved in international sales since 1982.

Mr. Larsen served in several key management positions for Struktol including, from 1999 – 2009, as the company’s International Business Manager. In this role he traveled and worked in more than 40 countries including China, India and Brazil and was instrumental in growing Struktol’s international revenues from 0 to 30% of total sales.

In his new position as International Sales Director with APV Engineered Coatings, Mr. Larsen will be working directly with the company’s international distributors to help grow sales across all product lines.
