Low-Temperature Maskant Products
APV's low-temperature coating masking materials prevent coating in selected areas during diffusion coating processes below 1,500°F (815°C).
A base-metal powder maskant used dry or as an undercoating for other materials in the APV masking system. When used as a slurry mask, it is combined with APV binder(s), depending on the application needs and process, and then top-coated with M-7 maskant Or M-13 maskant. M-1 is relatively inert to superalloy base metals. After thermal processing, the M-1 becomes a soft powder and is readily removed from the surface by an air blast. No grit blasting or wire brushing is required. Metallographic examination shows alloy depletion of approximately 0.0003-0.0005 inches with coating processing of about 2,000°F (1,095°C).
A base-metal powder maskant used to protect selected areas of nickel- and iron-based alloys/superalloys during chromium diffusion coating. It is used as a dry powder and does not need a binder. When used as a slurry mask, it can be combined with the recommended APV binder(s) to meet process and application needs.
An overcoating powder maskant which when combined with APV binder, provides a top coating to the M-1 maskant. M-7 forms a tight envelope (cocoon) over the M-1 after coating thermal processing. After processing, the envelope is hard and retains both the M-1 and itself intact, thereby avoiding contamination of the coating pack or coating mix source material during removal. The M-7 envelope is easily cracked open by striking with a wooden, plastic, or rubber implement. The easily removable, soft M-1 is readily evident under the M-7. M-7 is available in green to make it distinguishable from the part to be coated.
A finer particle (mesh) size version of M-1 maskant that provides approximately 50% reduction in particle size. It is primarily for diffusion coating processes above 1500°F. M-10 Dry Powder Maskant gives a sharper demarcation between the coating and masked surfaces (coat versus no-coat zones).
A base-metal powder maskant combining M-1 and M-7. It can be used dry or as a slurry mask when combined with B-4, B-100 or B-200. When used in slurry form it does not necessarily require separate coats of M-1 or M-10 and M-7 maskants.
An overcoating powder maskant that provides a top coating to the M-1 maskant. The advantage of using M-13 instead of M-7 is that it does not require aluminum to create a tight envelope (cocoon) after thermal treatment. It is especially effective in pure CVD coating processes, which do not usually introduce coating gases until the part to be coated reaches the appropriate coating temperature.

R.T.U. slurries can be incorporated into high-temperature coating masking systems (R.T.U. M-7/B-4, M-10/B-4, M-107/B-4) where diffusion coating processes are above 1500°F or incorporated into low-temperature coating masking system (R.T.U. M8/B-4) where diffusion coating processes are below 1500°F.
APV offers a line of masking putty and tape as alternatives to masking coatings and powders for diffusion products.
Maskant Custom Preforms are created for difficult-to-mask areas based on individual customer needs and specifications.
